Xbox Game Studios is the first-party publishing and development arm of Microsoft’s gaming division, responsible for franchises including Halo, Gears of War, Forza, Fable, Age of Empires, and Minecraft. Originally established as Microsoft Game Studios in 2000 and rebranded as Xbox Game Studios in 2019, the label has grown significantly through acquisitions including Bethesda Softworks parent ZeniMax Media in 2021 and Activision Blizzard in 2023, making Xbox Game Studios one of the largest game publishers in the world. Asha Sharma has served as CEO of the broader Xbox division since February 2026, following Phil Spencer’s retirement after 38 years at Microsoft.
I have been an Xbox player since the original console. Halo was the reason I bought one in the first place, and watching Xbox Game Studios grow from a handful of studios to the sprawling operation it is today has been one of the more interesting stories in gaming over the last two decades.
Microsoft Game Studios launched alongside the original Xbox in 2001, with Halo: Combat Evolved as the console’s defining launch title developed by Bungie. The label grew through acquisitions of Rare Ltd. in 2002 and Lionhead Studios in 2006, before accelerating dramatically under Phil Spencer’s leadership. Major acquisitions included Mojang Studios in 2014, Obsidian Entertainment and inXile Entertainment in 2018, and Double Fine Productions in 2019. The ZeniMax Media acquisition in 2021 for $7.5 billion brought Bethesda Game Studios, id Software, Arkane Studios, MachineGames, Tango Gameworks, and others under the Xbox umbrella. The Activision Blizzard acquisition in 2023 for $68.7 billion added Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Diablo, and Overwatch.
Xbox Game Studios’ expansion has been accompanied by significant studio closures. In May 2024, Microsoft closed Arkane Austin, Tango Gameworks, and Alpha Dog Games. On June 16, 2026, Microsoft announced the closure of Ninja Theory, Compulsion Games, and Double Fine Productions as part of continued restructuring across Xbox Game Studios. The closures came alongside the confirmation that Gears of War: E-Day would remain an Xbox console exclusive, a signal of the division’s refocused direction under Sharma toward a smaller number of high-priority projects.
Halo remains Xbox Game Studios’ flagship franchise, developed by Halo Studios, formerly 343 Industries, since Bungie’s departure. Halo: Campaign Evolved, a ground-up rebuild of the original in Unreal Engine 5, launches July 28, 2026 on Xbox Series X/S, PC, and PlayStation 5, marking the first time a mainline Halo title has appeared on a Sony console. Gears of War: E-Day, developed by The Coalition and People Can Fly, releases October 6, 2026 as an Xbox Series X/S console exclusive. Forza Motorsport and Forza Horizon continue as the leading racing simulation and open-world racing franchises respectively. Fable is in development at Playground Games as a reboot of the classic RPG series. Age of Empires continues through World’s Edge with Forgotten Empires handling Definitive Edition development.
Game Pass is central to Xbox Game Studios’ publishing strategy, with first-party titles releasing day one on the subscription service. Asha Sharma reduced Game Pass prices after taking over as CEO, reversing a price increase implemented under previous leadership. The service has grown to tens of millions of subscribers and represents Microsoft’s primary competitive differentiator in gaming against Sony’s PlayStation platform. All Xbox Game Studios titles release on Xbox Series X/S and PC, with select titles also coming to PlayStation following Microsoft’s earlier multiplatform pivot, though Sharma has since confirmed that titles like Gears of War: E-Day are returning to console exclusivity.
