Gears of War E-Day launches October 6, and before that The Coalition is giving players a chance to get into the multiplayer early. The open beta starts August 6 and runs across two weekends, with the first giving early access to pre-orders and Game Pass subscribers. I have been waiting for this game since I heard Mad World in the first trailer. The beta is the first chance to actually feel whether The Coalition has brought back what made the original Gears work.
Gears of War E-Day Beta Dates
The first beta weekend runs August 6 to 10 as an early access period. To get in during that window you need to have pre-ordered any edition of Gears of War E-Day, or have an active Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass subscription. A second open beta weekend follows with no pre-order required, though Microsoft has not confirmed the exact dates for that second weekend yet. Both weekends cover multiplayer only. The campaign is not part of the beta.
How to Get Into the Beta Early
Three ways in for the August 6 early access weekend. Pre-order any digital edition of Gears of War E-Day through the Xbox Store or Steam. Subscribe to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass. Or pre-order a physical copy and redeem the beta code included by your retailer. If you are already a Game Pass Ultimate subscriber, you are already in for the first weekend without doing anything else. The second weekend is open to everyone with no requirements, just wait for Microsoft to confirm those dates.
What Modes Are in the Beta
The beta will cover the multiplayer component, which means Versus and Horde Siege. Versus is the classic 4v4 competitive mode returning with new maps set in and around the city of Kalona, the game’s setting during Emergence Day. The Coalition has said the maps use the traditional symmetrical Gears design that competitive players know, but the new movement system changes how they play. Sprint sliding, jumping, and climbing are all in, and those additions will affect the PvP meta in ways that will take time to settle. Horde Siege is the bigger structural change. It supports up to twelve players across three squads of four, cooperating to defend Kalona against waves of Locust across larger city maps than previous Horde modes used. It is the closest Gears has come to a raid-style cooperative mode and is the thing I am most curious about in the beta.
I think one of the first times I streamed a Gears game, it was Horde mode in Gears of War 4 on release day with a group of people. It was a lot of fun and I may check out the Horde Siege mode in E-Day.
What Is New in Gears of War E-Day
The Coalition rebuilt everything from scratch for E-Day. Every character model, animation, weapon, and environment is new rather than ported from previous games. The move to Unreal Engine 5 made that possible and the team took advantage of it, including MegaLights, a UE5 lighting system the game is among the first to ship with. The campaign runs at 60 frames per second with hardware ray tracing. Multiplayer runs at up to 120 frames per second.
The movement system is the most significant gameplay change. Roadie run is gone, replaced by a proper sprint. Players can slide out of a sprint, jump across gaps, climb vehicles and structures, and use low cover by lying down. These are abilities the series has never had before and they change how the cover system works fundamentally. Returning weapons include the Lancer and the Longshot. New weapons include the Gutpuncher grenade launcher and the Incinerator shotgun. The Lancer in E-Day is technically a prototype since the chainsaw bayonet does not exist yet at this point in the timeline, which is one of the details I am genuinely interested to see how The Coalition handles.
Is Gears of War E-Day on PS5
No. E-Day is an Xbox Series X/S and PC exclusive. A PS5 version was reportedly in development before Xbox CEO Asha Sharma confirmed at the Xbox and PC Game Show 2026 that Gears of War E-Day would remain an Xbox console exclusive. It is available on Xbox Series X/S and PC via Steam and the Xbox Store, with Game Pass day one on both platforms.
Gears of War E-Day Release Date
October 6, 2026. The game releases on the twentieth anniversary year of the original Gears of War, which launched October 2006. That timing is deliberate, and The Coalition has said the whole project is built around returning to what made the original work, the horror tone, the weight of the combat, and the brotherhood between Marcus and Dom before everything that happened to them. I really hope that they nailed it.
