Age of Empires II is a real-time strategy game that focuses on building towns, gathering resources, and creating armies to defeat opponents. It was developed by Ensemble Studios and published by Microsoft (now Xbox Game Studios). The game was initially released on September 27, 1999 for Windows. On October 31, 2001 a version for Mac OS was released. Konami published a version for the Playstation 2 on November 2, 2001. A remaster called Age of Empires II: HD Edition was released on April 9, 2013 for Windows. Another remaster developed by Forgotten Empires called Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition was released on November 14, 2019 for Windows. On January 31, 2023 it came out for Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
I played Age of Empires II a lot growing up. We would play it in history class and on lunch breaks in school to better understand the history. I was bummed when they shut down the original’s servers, but there were ways to still play online until the 2013 version came out. When the Definitive Edition came out I knew I had to play it and even though I have only played it a few times, it brings back some fond memories.
