The Last of Us

The Last of Us is an action adventure game developed by Naughty Dog. The game was published by Sony Computer Entertainment on June 14, 2013 for the Playstation 3. A remastered version of the game released for the P4 on July 29, 2014. On September 2, 2022, The Last of Us Part I, a remake of the game was released for the Playstation 5 on September 2, 2022. It was then released on Windows on March 28, 2023.

The game starts on Joel’s birthday when the world started an ourbreak of a mutated Cordyceps fungus. The fungus turns humans into aggressive monsters. Joel starts to flee Texas with his brother Tommy and daughter Sarah. As they are leaving, Sarah is shot by a soldier and dies in her father’s arms.

Twenty years later and civilization has collapsed under the infection. Quarantine zones exist all over the country. Joel is working as a smuggler inside a Boston, Massachusetts based zone. After hunting down Robert, a black market dealer who stole weapons and traded them to a rebel militia group. The militia group known as the Fireflies, is opposed to the Federal Disaster Response Agency (FEDRA), the organization that controls the quarantine zones. Joel and his partner Tess are hired by the leader of the Fireflies, Marlene, to smuggle a girl, Ellie, to Fireflies hiding in the State House. They soon discover that Ellie was bitten a while ago, but never turned into a monster. She is somehow immune to the fungus and the Fireflies want to use her to find a cure.

At the State House, they discover that the Fireflies were killed. When Joel discovers that they are being hunted by FEDRA agents, Tess reveals that she was bit along the way. She sacrifices herself because she believes Ellie is that important. Joel decides to find more Fireflies and that his brother Tommy may be able to help. Tommy used to be a Firefly and he might be able to get Joel in touch with someone who could help. Joel and Ellie head west to find Tommy.

Joel reconnects with Tommy in Jackson, Wyomming after finding that he assembled a settlement near a hydroelectric dam with his wife, Maria. Tommy tells them to head to the Fireflies that are held up at the University of East Colorado. They don’t find any Fireflies, but they do find that they have moved to a Salt Lake City, Utah hospital. They also find bandits who severely wound Joel.

Joel and Ellie take shelter in the mountains as Joel is dying. Ellie finds some scavengers, David and James, who are willing to trade medicine for food, but after hearing that the bandits at the school were part of their group, Ellie decides she can’t let them get away with it. Ellie is captured and they try to make Ellie join their cannibal group. Ellie escapes after killing James, but David gets her trapped in a burning restaurant. Joel recovers from his injuries and arrives just as Ellie kills David with a machete. Ellie breaks down and Joel comforts her before the two leave for Salt Lake City.

A Firefly patrol captures them and brings them to the hospital. Marlene is there and tells Joel that Ellie is being prepped for surgery. Confused as to why, Marlene explains that they will take the infected portion of Ellie’s brain in the hopes of producing a vaccine. The surgery will however, kill Ellie. Joel can’t handle that news and kills all Fireflies in the area. He takes an unconscious Ellie and heads back to Tommy. When Ellie wakes up, Joel tells her that they found other immune people, but couldn’t create a cure, so they stopped trying.

The Last of Us: Left Behind

The Last of Us: Left Behind is a DLC for The Last of Us for the PS3. It was bundled in with the remaster for the Playstation 4. A stand-alone version of the DLC for both consoles released in May of 2015. It was also included with the Playstation 5 version of the game.

The story takes place after Joel is attacked and injured in Colorado. Ellie must fight and kill other members of the cannibal group that attacked them. Once they are dealt with, she heads to Joel to treat his injuries with the medicine she finds along the way.

The story they heads back to weeks before Ellie met Joel. Riley surprises Ellie at threir Boston boarding school after running away a month prior. She tells Ellie that she has joined the Fireflies. They head to an abandoned mall where she explains how she has to head to a different city, but wanted to see Ellie one last time. Before the two part ways, they plug a Walkman into the sound system and the two dance on a display case, where Ellie begs Riley not to leave. Riley agrees to stay, which causes Ellie to kiss her. The two are chased by a hoard of infected monsters who heard the music. The two are bitten and decide to spend their last few hours together. Riley soon succumbs to the fungus, but Ellie never does. Ellie has discovered that she is immune to the virus.
