Last of Us

The Last of Us is a post-apocalyptic survival franchise created by Neil Druckmann and developed by Naughty Dog for Sony Interactive Entertainment, set in a United States overrun by a Cordyceps fungal infection that transforms humans into zombie-like creatures. The original game released in June 2013 and is widely regarded as one of the best games ever made. The franchise spans two mainline games, a standalone expansion, full remasters and remakes, and an HBO television series that holds the record for the biggest debut season in HBO history. Season 3 of the show is currently filming in Vancouver with a 2027 premiere expected.

The Last of Us (2013)

The Last of Us, directed by Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley and developed by Naughty Dog, released June 14, 2013, for PlayStation 3. The game follows Joel Miller, a survivor hardened by the loss of his daughter Sarah in the outbreak’s early days, twenty years later tasked with smuggling a teenage girl named Ellie across a ruined America. Ellie is immune to the Cordyceps infection, a biological anomaly that a resistance group called the Fireflies believes can lead to a vaccine. The relationship between Joel and Ellie across the game’s journey became the emotional core that distinguished The Last of Us from the survival horror games that preceded it, with performances by Troy Baker as Joel and Ashley Johnson as Ellie widely praised as among the best in the medium’s history.

The Last of Us: Left Behind, a standalone expansion released February 14, 2014, followed a younger Ellie in the days before the main game’s events through her friendship with Riley, her closest companion before the outbreak separated them. The Last of Us Remastered arrived July 29, 2014, for PlayStation 4 with improved visuals and performance. The Last of Us Part I, a full ground-up remake built in a new engine, released September 2, 2022, for PlayStation 5 and March 28, 2023, for PC.

The Last of Us Part II (2020)

The Last of Us Part II, directed by Neil Druckmann with Anthony Newman and Kurt Margenau, released June 19, 2020, for PlayStation 4 as one of the most commercially successful and critically divisive games of the generation. Set five years after the first game, the sequel follows Ellie and introduces Abby, a soldier whose personal history intersects violently with Ellie’s in the game’s opening act. The decision to structure the game around two protagonists whose stories are told in sequence, with Abby’s section played after the player already knows what she did from Ellie’s perspective, generated intense audience debate about the limits of empathy in interactive storytelling. The game won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2020 and sold over ten million copies. A PC version was reportedly completed in late 2024.

The HBO Series: Season 1

The Last of Us debuted on HBO on January 15, 2023, as the biggest premiere in the network’s history. Created by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, the series stars Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie across a first season that adapted the events of the first game with high fidelity while expanding certain supporting characters significantly. The third episode, Long Long Time, followed the relationship between survivalist Bill, played by Nick Offerman, and his partner Frank, played by Murray Bartlett, across decades and received an Emmy Award for Offerman’s performance. The season ran nine episodes and cemented the show as a prestige HBO drama rather than a genre adaptation.

The HBO Series: Season 2

Season 2 premiered April 13, 2025, across seven episodes, adapting roughly the first half of The Last of Us Part II. Kaitlyn Dever joined as Abby, Isabela Merced played Dina, and Jeffrey Wright played Isaac, the Washington Liberation Front leader. Pedro Pascal’s Joel dies early in the season as in the game, a structural choice that generated significant audience reaction. Storm Reid returned as Riley. HBO renewed the series for a third season ahead of the Season 2 premiere, reflecting confidence in the production ahead of its most narratively challenging material.

The HBO Series: Season 3

Season 3 began filming in Vancouver in March and April 2026, with production entering a planned hiatus in June 2026 coinciding with World Cup matches hosted in Vancouver before resuming July 1. The season shifts its central perspective to Abby as the story follows the second half of The Last of Us Part II’s events. Kaitlyn Dever leads, with Bella Ramsey, Isabela Merced, Gabriel Luna, and Jeffrey Wright returning. Peter Sarsgaard joins as Amon, a leader of the Seraphites. Clea DuVall and Jorge Lendeborg Jr. are among the new cast additions. Neil Druckmann stepped back from writing and directing Season 3 while remaining as co-creator and executive producer. Craig Mazin has indicated the story may require a fourth season to complete, though HBO has suggested Season 3 could serve as the conclusion. A 2027 premiere is expected.
