The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020 and was nearly impossible to find for the better part of two years. Supply chain issues from the pandemic meant that demand far outpaced availability, and scalpers made the situation worse. When people did finally get their hands on one, what they found was a genuinely impressive leap forward, faster load times, a controller that actually changed how games felt, and a library that has grown steadily since launch.

I got my Playstation 5 after they announced Playstation Plus would become a game subscription service. When I got it, I played the God of War series. When Spiderman 2 came out, I got the 19 inches of Venom deluxe edition. That was my absolute favorite PS5 game.

PlayStation 5 Games and Library

The PS5 library has grown into a strong collection of exclusives and cross-generation titles. Demon’s Souls, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Returnal, God of War Ragnarok, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and Astro Bot have all showcased what the hardware can do. Backward compatibility with PS4 games meant the console had a deep library from day one, and many PS4 titles received free PS5 upgrades that improved performance and frame rates significantly.

PlayStation 5 Hardware and DualSense Controller

The PS5 is built around a custom AMD Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU, supporting 4K output at up to 120 frames per second in supported titles. The custom SSD is the most transformative hardware change, reducing load times that once took minutes down to seconds and enabling new game design possibilities around instant traversal. The DualSense controller introduced haptic feedback and adaptive triggers that create genuine physical resistance tied to in-game actions, a feature that developers like Insomniac and Housemarque have used to strong effect.

PlayStation 5 Models

Sony released the PS5 in two configurations at launch, a standard edition with a disc drive and a Digital Edition without one. A slimmer redesign followed in 2023, reducing the console’s considerable size while keeping the same internal hardware. The PS5 Pro launched in 2024 with a significantly upgraded GPU for improved performance and visual fidelity on supported titles, targeting players who want the highest quality output the platform can deliver.

PlayStation 5 Legacy So Far

The PS5 has sold over 60 million units as of early 2025 and continues to build on the foundation the PS4 established. Sony’s focus on first-party exclusives, PlayStation Studios output, and PlayStation Productions adaptations of its game properties into film and television has kept the brand at the center of gaming culture. The God of War and The Last of Us franchises in particular have expanded well beyond games and given PlayStation a cultural reach that extends to audiences who have never picked up a controller.

The PS5 is still the current generation, and its best games may not have been announced yet. We know Wolverine is coming and that is sure to be a huge game for the PS5, I will definitely be picking it up.
