Epic Mickey: Rebrushed is an action-adventure game developed by Purple Lamp. The game was published by THQ Nordic on September 24, 2024 for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PS5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Android and iOS will get the game on September 16, 2026. A port for the Nintendo Switch 2 will be released on October 6, 2026. The game is a remake of the Wii game Epic Mickey, that was released on November 30, 2010. The original game was developed by Junction Point Studios and published by Disney Interactive Studios.
I had Epic Mickey 2 in my Xbox library for years, but was always hesitant to play it since I never played the first game. When Epic Mickey: Rebrushed was announced, I preordered it as soon as I could for my Xbox Series X.
Epic Mickey: Rebrushed Gameplay
The game is pretty unique in that you use paint and paint thinner to change the world. Combat is pretty simple, it's also built around paint and thinner instead of combos. Levels encourage revisiting areas to uncover secrets or alter how characters respond, with choices subtly shifting quests and world states without forcing a heavy morality system. The remake includes tighter controls as well as clearer objectives.
Epic Mickey: Rebrushed Story
Epic Mickey: Rebrushed begins with Mickey Mouse accidentally entering Wasteland, a forgotten world built from discarded Disney ideas and characters. His curiosity leads him to unleash the Shadow Blot, a mistake that sets the entire narrative in motion and forces him to confront the consequences of what he's done. The world itself reflects abandonment and memory, with each region shaped by creations that were left behind, giving the story a tone built around loss and nostalgia.
As Mickey explores Wasteland, he encounters Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, who becomes the emotional center of the story. Oswald's resentment toward Mickey stems from being replaced in Disney's history, and their early interactions are tense and defensive. Over time, the narrative shifts toward reconciliation, with Mickey proving through his actions that he isn't there to take anything from Oswald but to repair the damage he caused. Their evolving relationship drives much of the plot, turning the story into a character-focused journey rather than a simple hero-versus-villain setup. Admittedly, I never heard of Oswald before. I assumed that he was created for the game. It was interesting reading about him and how he was created before Mickey Mouse was.
The story moves through different districts of Wasteland, each tied to forgotten corners of Disney's past. Characters react to Mickey based on how he uses paint or thinner, creating small variations in tone and dialogue. These choices reinforce the theme of responsibility, showing how Mickey's decisions shape the world and the people living in it. By the end, the narrative centers on healing. Mickey accepts accountability and Oswald confronts his bitterness. Once they both take responsibility for their parts, Wasteland stabilizes and its inhabitants regain purpose.
