Politicians are saying that the American family is failing, but what they don’t realize is that while the family structure may be changing, it is definitely not failing. It is true that the divorce rate is high in America, but that doesn’t mean that families are failing, just that marriages are.
In the twenty first century families are more than just people you are related to by blood, they are people you are related to by circumstances, experiences, and just plain choice. Friends are closer than ever, having ways to constantly stay in touch through the use of technology. Ten years ago you’d never find people on the internet who were away who were your extended family, but the times have changed, and whether you speak to them on the phone, the internet, face to face, no matter what you might someday consider them family.
While the government may be saying that the American family is failing, who are they to generalize us? The family structure is different now, but it is a lot stronger than it was in the 1990’s.
