"Passion, it lies in all of us, sleeping… waiting… and though unwanted… unbidden… it will stir… open its jaws and howl. It speaks to us… guides us… passion rules us all, and we obey. What other choice do we have? Passion is the source of our finest moments. The joy of love… the clarity of hatred… and the ecstasy of grief. It hurts sometimes more than we can bear. If we could live without passion maybe we’d know some kind of peace… but we would be hollow… Empty rooms shuttered and dank. Without passion we’d be truly dead."
Those words were written by Joss Whedon and spoken by David Boreanaz in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I think it is a truly amazing quote, but flawed. Greed would be the offset of passion. With greed people do things they wouldn’t necessarily do, but maybe some would say that greed is another form of passion. I don’t agree with that, however if it is, then it is the dark form of passion.
Let’s take Myspace for example. Tom Anderson, everybody’s "first friend" made Myspace out of passion. He wanted a place where people could come together for free and have somewhere online to talk and post bulletins and join people with similar interests. Somewhere he lost the passion. When he sol Myspace he gave in to greed. Everyday that a Myspace error occurs they give in to greed. Why? Because with all the money in the world they don’t fix the errors, they just let them keep happening. Why? Would it cost too much money for more servers, would the CEO not have that million dollars a week that he is so accustomed to?
Not all companies loose the passion. Look at Facebook. They were going to be showing targeted ads to you based on your buying habits. An online petition changed all that though. They didn’t give into the greed that so many others have.
Going back to the original quote, say we gave up the passion and replaced it with pure greed. What would happen? We wouldn’t be hollow as Joss has said, instead we would do anything to get that with which we so desire, money, fame, possessions. What is sad is that a lot of people are already like this. So many are filled with keeping their eye on the prize instead of seeing the journey. The journey is where the passion is, the prize at the end isn’t as important at the end if you keep your eyes open on the journey.
Now I will leave you with this to contemplate, do you look at the journey and see the passion and where and how it takes you, or do you focus on the greed and don’t care how you get there just as long as you get the prize?
