PowerWash Simulator is a simulation game developed by FuturLab and published by Square Enix Collective. It went into Steam early access on May 19, 2021, and fully released for Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on July 14, 2022. The Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 versions followed on January 31, 2023. A virtual reality port called PowerWash Simulator VR came out on November 2, 2023, for the Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest 3, and Meta Quest Pro, and the game arrived on macOS, iOS, tvOS, and visionOS on December 3, 2025.
PowerWash Simulator takes a chore nobody wants to do and somehow makes it hard to put down. There's no combat and no way to fail, just a filthy job and a pressure washer. It's a very relaxing game that I have found myself playing randomly before bed to put me in a nice relaxed mood.
How Does PowerWash Simulator Work?
Every job starts the same way. The player shows up at a location buried in grime and sprays until every surface is clean. Each object is broken into parts, like a fire truck's windows or a bungalow's gutters, and each part flashes and dings the moment it hits 100%. That ding is the whole hook.
A percentage meter tracks the overall job, and the parts list shows exactly which pieces still need work. That list matters on the bigger maps, where one missed patch of dirt under a bench can hold up the whole job. The Good Dings to Come achievement flips this around by asking players to clean 95% of a job without finishing a single task.
Career Mode carries the Muckingham story, Challenge Mode adds medal runs where Going for Gold and Gold Standard come from, and Free Play lets players replay any job without pressure.
PowerWash Simulator Upgrades: Washers, Nozzles, and Soap
Jobs pay out money, and that money goes straight into better gear. The washer lineup runs from the Prime Vista 1500 through the UrbanX U2 and Prime Vista 3000 up to the Prime Vista PRO, with each one cleaning faster than the last and unlocking more attachments.
The nozzles are color coded by spray angle. The red nozzle is the narrowest and strongest, built for caked-on grime, while the white nozzle spreads wide to cover flat surfaces fast but barely dents stubborn dirt. A couple of achievements lean into this, with Powerful Pressure Purist requiring the entire van to be cleaned with only the red nozzle and Delicate Excavation forcing the white nozzle across the whole Ancient Monument. Extensions help reach roofs and other high spots, though some jobs still need ladders and scaffolding.
Soap is the other upgrade. Each surface type has its own cleaning liquid, like one for brick and another for wood, and spraying it on first makes the dirt come off much faster. Owning every cleaning liquid at the same time unlocks Soap Connoisseur.

Let's clean this place up!
PowerWash Simulator Story: Cleaning Up Muckingham
You start the game having just started your power washing business. In fact, the first job is cleaning your own van. Once the van is clean and ready to go, you start taking jobs around the town of Muckingham.
At first it seems like a normal town, but soon weird things start happening. A dormant volcano shows strange activity, and all the town's cats disappear. Things get even weirder when a time traveling scientist hires you to clean a flying saucer.

The PowerWash Simulator 2023 roadmap
How Does PowerWash Simulator End? The Volcano and the Missing Cats
The seismic activity from the volcano unearths two statues, which of course are dirty and need to be cleaned. Once they're done, one statue fires a beam toward the volcano and the other fires toward a temple that smells an awful lot like fish, which explains where all the local cats went.
Once you clean the temple, a gem appears and fires another beam at the volcano. That saves the timeline, and the scientist can finally return to his own time. The town's cats come back, and you even find the mayor's cat in your van with her kittens.
PowerWash Simulator Multiplayer and Co-op
PowerWash Simulator supports online co-op for up to six players, so a group can split up a job and blast through it together. Career mode progress carries the story, while co-op works well for the bigger DLC levels.
PowerWash Simulator DLC: Every Special Pack
FuturLab kept PowerWash Simulator going for years with Special Packs. Some were free and others were paid, and several of them crossed over with other franchises. On top of those, the free Muckingham Files packs add new jobs beyond the original campaign, and seasonal jobs like the Halloween House and Santa's Workshop can be played year round.

Powerwashing meets Tomb Raider
Tomb Raider Special Pack: Cleaning Croft Manor
Lara Croft is a famous archaeologist who has uncovered plenty of unique artifacts on her journeys. While she was away, her mansion got filthy, so she hired a power washer to clean it up. It's not just the outer brick that needs work, either. Her obstacle course, her vehicles, and her trophy room all need a deep clean. More on Lara is on the Tomb Raider franchise page.

Look at that dinosaur!

Cleaning up Midgar in the Final Fantasy 7 DLC
Final Fantasy VII Special Pack: Cleaning Midgar
In the Final Fantasy VII Remake crossover, Shinra hires you to clean its robots and Mako reactor. Shinra isn't the only client in Midgar, though. Avalanche also brings you in to clean their vehicles and Tifa's Seventh Heaven bar.

Let's go back to the cleaning!
Back to the Future Special Pack
The Back to the Future pack doesn't have you cleaning Hill Valley itself. Instead you're cleaning up the movie sets. It's the 1980s, the films are in production, and before the cameras roll, the DeLorean, the train, and several sets all need a deep clean. Don't run out of time!

Who needs their pineapple cleaned in the sea? Spongebob Squarepants!
SpongeBob SquarePants Special Pack
Bikini Bottom is filthy and needs a cleanup. The first job is Conch Street, where SpongeBob's pineapple sits between Squidward's house and Patrick's rock. From there the jobs move to the Bikini Bottom Bus and the Krusty Krab, with the Chum Bucket waiting across the street. The pack also covers the Patty Wagon, the Invisible Boatmobile, and Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy's Mermalair, so it hits most of the iconic SpongeBob locations.
I started watching SpongeBob because of this DLC. I never really watched it growing up and it's still not my favorite, but I do check it out more from time to time now.

Let's clean miniatures or whatever they do in Warhammer?
Warhammer 40,000 Special Pack
The Warhammer 40,000 pack takes the power washing into Games Workshop's grimdark future, where even the Imperium's war machines need a scrub. The jobs start with an Ultramarines Land Raider and a Redemptor Dreadnought, then move on to an Astra Militarum Rogal Dorn Battle Tank and a towering Imperial Knight Paladin. The last job is a Thunderhawk gunship, which is about as far from a muddy garden patio as this game gets.

Let's see how deep the rabbit hole goes
Alice's Adventures Special Pack: Cleaning Wonderland
The Alice's Adventures Special Pack launched on July 2, 2024, and hit PowerWash Simulator VR on Meta Quest on July 11. Since Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is in the public domain, FuturLab didn't need a license for this one. The setup flips the story around, with Wonderland left in ruins by a curious little girl and the player sent down the rabbit hole to clean up after her. The five levels are Wonderland Entrance Hall, White Rabbit's House, Caterpillar's Mushroom, Mad Tea Party, and Queen of Hearts' Court. FuturLab said this pack was the first time it let players wash food, since nobody would realistically hire a power washer for that, but Wonderland isn't supposed to make sense. The pack also adds 10 achievements and Wonderland skins for the player and the washer.

I was promised a tea party
This DLC had me curious about the two Johnny Depp Alice in Wonderland movies. They were much better than I thought they would be and kind of reminded me of American McGee's Alice.

Now this IS a tea party!

Let's clean a dog house!
Wallace & Gromit Special Pack: Cleaning 62 West Wallaby Street
The Wallace & Gromit Special Pack launched on March 4, 2025, made in partnership with Aardman shortly after Vengeance Most Fowl came out. It fits better than most crossovers, since Wallace and Gromit already ran a window washing business back in A Close Shave. A mechanical malfunction has made a mess of 62 West Wallaby Street, and instead of the regular worker, the player controls the WASH LAD, Wallace's newest invention for household cleaning. The five jobs are Wallace & Gromit's Dining Room & Kitchen, Wallace & Gromit's House, The Knit-O-Matic, Wallace & Gromit's Vehicles, and The Moon Rocket, which ends the pack with a trip to the cheesy surface of the moon. Aardman writer Finbar Hawkins helped polish the script so the dialogue sounds like the characters.

Space: the final cleantier

I didn't even know you could clean a swamp
Shrek Special Pack: Cleaning the Swamp and Far Far Away
The Shrek Special Pack launched on October 10, 2024, with five levels from the DreamWorks movies. Shrek's Swamp is covered in glittery goop, and the inside of Shrek's house is open to clean too. Duloc is full of art left behind by some disgruntled knights. The Fairy Godmother's Potion Factory from Shrek 2 is recreated with working machines, and the Dragon's Lair hoard has lost its shine. The last job is Hansel's Honeymoon Hideaway, which Shrek and Fiona left in rough shape. The pack swaps the usual worker for a knight character with a sword-shaped power washer and adds 10 achievements.

Wait, I'm not supposed to be spray painting the out house?
I've always loved Shrek and being able to hang out and clean the swamp was great. Seeing the swamp all colorful and not just cleaning mud was also a nice little twist, since Shrek loves his mud.

Grr, I'm an ogre and I have layers!
Why Were the Tomb Raider and Final Fantasy VII DLC Removed?
Both the Tomb Raider and Final Fantasy VII packs were free, and both came from FuturLab's publishing relationship with Square Enix, which owns both series. When that partnership ended, FuturLab announced it would pull the two packs. Players could claim them until May 19, 2026, and anyone who grabbed them before then still has them in their library.
PowerWash Simulator 2
FuturLab followed up with PowerWash Simulator 2 in 2025, which it self-published. The sequel has a new campaign along with four-player online co-op and local split-screen, and the full series is covered on the PowerWash Simulator franchise page.
