Let's go Kratos!
After exacting his revenge on Zeus, Kratos leaves Sparta behind and settles down in Midgard. There he finds a new love in Faye and the two soon marry and have a child, Altreus. After Faye dies, the father and son set out to fulfill her last wish, to have her ashes scattered on the highest peak in the nine realms.
When the two find their path blocked by a mysterious myst, they visit a witch that instructs them to get a magical light and extinguish it. With their path now clear, they head off to Midgard’s peak. There they find a stranger who attacked Kratos previously, who they now know is Baldur. He is with his nephews, Modi and Magni. When they leave, Kratos finds Mimir who is imprisoned in a tree. Mimir tells them that the highest point in the Nine Realms is actually Jötunheim. He instructs Kratos to chop off his head and have it revived by the witch, then he will help them get there. Upon being revived, he reveals that the witch is the goddess Freya, which makes him instantly mistrust her. Both she and Mimir tell him that he needs to tell his son about who he really is.
I'm ready to take this big guy down!
After killing Magni and being attacked by Modi later on, Altreus is overcome by an illness that happens when a god believes himself to be mortal. Freya says he has to go to Helheim to retrieve the heart of a troll. His ice axe would be useless in the icy realm, so Kratos retrieves his old weapons, the Blades of Chaos. After being haunted by both Athena’s spirit and visions of Zeus, Kratos returns with the heart and he tells his resurrected son that they are gods. This causes Altreus to become arrogant and murder Modi.
Hey, Atreus, I bet you can't hit me!
To get to Jötunheim, Mimir needs his missing eye. Once getting it, Baldur attacks again, but this time Freya steps in determined to protect her son. Altreus hits him with a mistletoe arrow, making him vulnerable. He tries to strangle his mother, Freya, but despite being warned to stop, Kratos kills Baldur. Freya blames Kratos and vows revenge, before leaving with Baldur’s corpse. Kratos then tells Altreus how he killed his own father, Zeus.
We fight together!
When they finally reach Jötunheim, they find a temple with murals depicting their journey. It shows Baldur who was really after Faye the whole time, unknown to him that she had died. It showed Faye who was a Giant, making Altreus half Giant, half god. Altreus is called Loki in the murals. Upon returning to Midgard, Mimir warns them Baldur’s death has caused Fimbulwinter to begin nearly a century earlier than it was supposed to, meaning Ragnarok is soon to come.
