Ensemble Studios

Ensemble Studios was an American video game developer based in Dallas, Texas, founded in 1995 by Tony Goodman, John Boog-Scott, and Bruce Shelley. The studio defined the real-time strategy genre’s peak commercial era through the Age of Empires series and Age of Mythology before Microsoft closed it in January 2009 following the completion of Halo Wars. Several former Ensemble developers went on to found Robot Entertainment and other studios. Age of Empires II remains one of the most played RTS games ever made, with an active competitive community sustained by the definitive edition released in 2019.

Age of Empires

Age of Empires launched in October 1997 and established Ensemble as a major force in PC gaming. The game combined historical civilizations across multiple ages of development with resource gathering and base building in a real-time format, drawing comparisons to Westwood’s Command and Conquer and Blizzard’s Warcraft series while carving its own identity through historical authenticity and civilizational diversity. The Rise of Rome expansion in 1998 extended the formula. Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings in 1999 is widely considered the series peak and one of the greatest RTS games ever made, covering medieval civilizations with a depth of balance, campaign design, and multiplayer that kept it competitive for decades. Age of Empires II: The Conquerors expansion in 2000 added five new civilizations including the Aztecs, Mayans, and Spanish.

Age of Mythology and Age of Empires III

Age of Mythology in 2002 was Ensemble’s most ambitious departure from the historical formula, replacing civilizations drawn from real history with Greek, Egyptian, and Norse mythology and adding gods, myth units, and divine powers to the strategy layer. It received strong reviews and expanded the studio’s creative range. Age of Empires III in 2005 moved to the colonial era and introduced a home city system that added persistent progression between matches, though it divided the community compared to the second game’s cleaner design.

Halo Wars and Closure

Halo Wars was announced as Ensemble’s final project before Microsoft confirmed the studio’s closure in September 2008. The game, a console-focused RTS set in the Halo universe designed around a controller rather than a mouse and keyboard, released in February 2009 to positive reviews that praised its approachable design and Halo authenticity. It was the last game Ensemble shipped before closing in January 2009. The franchise rights stayed with Microsoft, and 343 Industries later published Halo Wars 2, developed by Creative Assembly, in 2017.

Legacy and Former Staff

Several Ensemble alumni founded Robot Entertainment in 2009, which developed Orcs Must Die and continued working in the RTS-adjacent space. The Age of Empires IP remained with Microsoft, which commissioned Forgotten Empires and other studios to develop Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition in 2019, Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition in 2020, and Age of Empires IV with Relic Entertainment in 2021. The Definitive Edition of Age of Empires II revitalized the competitive community and introduced the series to a new generation of players, a testament to how durable Ensemble’s foundational design was.
