RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic is a management simulation game developed by Origin8 Technologies and Graphite Lab and published by Atari. It is a version of the older games RollerCoaster Tycoon and its sequel, RollerCoaster Tycoon 2, originally created by Chris Sawyer for the PC. The game is a part of Play Anywhere, which is the only reason I was able to get my game saves to work. I played the Xbox PC version of the game.
RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic Release Date and Platforms
RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic launched for Android and iOS on December 21, 2016, and came to PC through Steam and GOG on September 28, 2017. A version for Nintendo Switch followed on December 5, 2024. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S got the game on March 27, 2026, and it released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch 2 on May 28, 2026.

What Is Included in RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic
RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic combines RollerCoaster Tycoon and RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 with 95 classic park scenarios. It also comes with the Toolkit, Wacky Worlds, and Time Twister expansion packs. Wacky Worlds adds 17 scenarios that take players around the globe, and Time Twister adds 14 scenarios themed around history and fantasy. The game also includes a number of Six Flags parks, and it can import most saved parks and scenarios created in the original RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 for PC.
RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic Gameplay
RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic plays like a faithful recreation of the original RollerCoaster Tycoon and RollerCoaster Tycoon 2, blending park management with detailed ride construction. You begin each scenario with a set objective, such as reaching a certain guest count or park rating by a deadline, and must build and manage your amusement park to achieve it. The game emphasizes balancing creativity with strategy, requiring you to design rides that are thrilling but not too intense while keeping guests fed and safe.

The roller coaster building system is the centerpiece of gameplay. You construct tracks piece by piece, adding drops, loops, corkscrews, and tunnels to create unique rides. Each coaster is judged by excitement, intensity, and nausea ratings, and success depends on finding the right balance. Beyond coasters, you can place other attractions like Ferris wheels, log flumes, and haunted houses, as well as shops and scenery to theme your park and improve guest satisfaction.
Management is equally important. You hire staff such as mechanics, handymen, and entertainers to keep the park running smoothly. Rides need regular inspections to avoid breakdowns, and guests respond to cleanliness and pricing. You set ticket prices and manage ride maintenance costs, and marketing campaigns bring in more visitors. Research adds new rides and shops over time.
Classic stands out because it preserves the original mechanics while updating the interface for modern devices.
RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic Controls and My Thoughts
As much fun as the game is, I did have issues with the controls. In modern games, clicking and dragging around is usually how you rotate. In Classic, just like the originals, you have to click a button to rotate. Rotating the rides was equally annoying and I would often put one high into the air over a pathway that it was connected to. Sometimes it would visually look fine, then all of a sudden I was getting alerts that people can't pee because the bathroom is too high.
