I have been streaming RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic the last few days. I bought it last month during the GamesCom sale and had no idea that they had ported this to Xbox PC. This game was a huge part of my childhood growing up. Unfortunately, I ran into something that will ruin a good park session fast. The game says it is saving. The little progress indicator does its thing. Then I quit and reopen and the save is just gone. No error message, no crash, nothing to point at. Just an empty slot where a finished scenario used to be. The original game in the 1990s had no problem saving, so it is weird that this newer version has this problem.
The Save That Says It Worked and Didn't
This is not a corrupted file or a one time glitch. I checked and this exact complaint has been floating around the RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic Steam community since the game launched in 2017, with people reporting saves that freeze on the loading wheel or just silently fail to stick. So this is not a me problem, and it is not a new problem.
Why I Blamed the Windows Store Version First
I am running the Windows Store version of RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic, so my first assumption was that this was a Microsoft Store sandboxing issue. That platform has a long history of games writing save data to the wrong folder or getting blocked by permissions that Steam versions do not deal with. Except people playing the Steam version report the same saving failures, which rules out Windows Store being the sole culprit.
The Play Anywhere Confusion
RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic is an Xbox Play Anywhere title with Xbox cloud saves listed as one of its supported capabilities. What threw me is that there is no separate Xbox app release distinct from the Windows Store version the way some Play Anywhere titles handle it. The PC entitlement and the console entitlement are tied to the same purchase, which is exactly why a console session can end up fixing a PC save problem. The cloud save is the thing actually keeping the two in sync, not the platform itself.
What I Tried That Did Nothing
Before I found the actual fix, I ran through the usual troubleshooting checklist. Running the game as administrator changed nothing. Adjusting Windows security settings and folder permissions changed nothing. A full reboot, something I really should do more often anyway, changed nothing either. None of it touched the actual problem because the problem was not local to my PC install in the way I assumed.
The Fix: Save on Xbox First
What finally worked was booting RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic on Xbox instead of PC. I opened a park challenge on console and saved it there. That save went up through Xbox cloud saves the way it is supposed to. When I went back to the Windows Store version on PC, that Xbox save was sitting there waiting, and from that point forward saving on PC started working normally.
Why a Console Save Fixes a PC Bug
My read on this is that the Windows Store version has trouble initiating that first cloud save handshake on its own, but once there is an existing save tied to the account through Xbox cloud saves, PC has no problem reading and writing to it after that. The console side of a Play Anywhere title seems to reliably kick off the cloud sync in a way the PC client does not always manage by itself.
If Xbox Is Not an Option
I know not everyone has a console sitting next to their PC, so the console fix is not universal advice. Anyone stuck with the Windows Store version and no Xbox to fall back on should still try the basics, verifying the install, checking that OneDrive or antivirus software is not intercepting the save folder, and confirming there is actually storage space and a signed in Microsoft account tied to the session, since a missing cloud save link is the common thread here even without a console involved.
The Takeaway
This is not an argument for abandoning PC gaming. It is one specific workaround for one specific bug that has apparently outlived several years of patches. If RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic is stuck showing a save that never actually saves, borrowing a console for five minutes to open a challenge and save it there is worth trying before reinstalling anything.
