Claire Redfield is one of the most enduring characters in the Resident Evil series, a college student who goes looking for her brother and ends up surviving one of the worst nights in Raccoon City history. She debuted in Resident Evil 2 in 1998 and has stuck around for decades as a fan favorite, appearing across games, films, and animated features. She is not a trained soldier or a special agent, which is exactly what makes her work. Claire is a regular person thrown into a nightmare, and she gets through it on nerve and resourcefulness rather than military training.
Who Is Claire Redfield?
Claire Redfield is the younger sister of Chris Redfield, one of the founding members of the S.T.A.R.S. unit. She first arrives in Raccoon City searching for Chris, only to walk straight into the middle of the zombie outbreak caused by the Umbrella Corporation. Over the course of the series she goes from a scared college student to a hardened survivor and activist, eventually joining the anti-bioterrorism group TerraSave. What sets her apart from characters like Leon or Chris is that she never becomes a government operative or a super soldier. She stays a civilian who keeps ending up in the worst possible situations and keeps making it out.
Claire Redfield in Resident Evil 2
Claire’s story begins in Resident Evil 2, where she arrives in Raccoon City looking for Chris and meets rookie cop Leon S. Kennedy as the city falls apart around them. The two get separated almost immediately, and Claire’s path takes her through the Raccoon City Police Department and the streets beyond as she tries to survive. Along the way she meets Sherry Birkin, a young girl she takes under her protection, and the bond between them becomes the emotional core of her campaign. She also crosses paths with the relentless Tyrant known as Mr. X, who stalks her through the police station.
A friend of mine bought the game and started playing as Leon, but offered me the Claire disc so I could play then we would switch. It was the first time I played a game where you switched characters halfway through the game. Definitely a memorable experience.
Claire Redfield in the Resident Evil Series
Resident Evil Code: Veronica
Claire returns as the lead in Resident Evil Code: Veronica, which picks up her story after Raccoon City. Captured by Umbrella and imprisoned on Rockfort Island, she fights her way through another outbreak and eventually reunites with Chris, finally closing the loop on the search that started her whole journey. Code: Veronica is where Claire’s story and Chris’s story come back together, and it remains a favorite among longtime fans.
Resident Evil 2 Remake
Claire returned in the 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2, rebuilt from the ground up with modern visuals and a redesigned Raccoon City. Her campaign covers the same core story, her search for Chris, meeting Leon, and protecting Sherry, but the remake deepens the characters and makes the horror far more intense. The remake introduced Claire to a whole new generation of players and stands as one of the best-regarded remakes in the series.
When I played the remake, I played as Claire first to recreate the experience of the first game as much as I could.
Later Appearances
Claire has continued to appear across the franchise, including the CG animated film Resident Evil: Degeneration alongside Leon, and Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness. She shows up in various spin-offs and crossovers as well, keeping her in the mix even in entries where she is not the lead. For a character introduced in 1998, she has stayed remarkably present across the series.
Claire Redfield in Live-Action Films
Claire has appeared in two separate live-action film continuities. In the Paul W. S. Anderson film series, she was played by Ali Larter, debuting in Resident Evil: Extinction in 2007 and returning in Resident Evil: Afterlife and Resident Evil: Retribution, though Larter sat out one of the later entries before the series concluded. In the 2021 reboot Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, which aimed for a more faithful adaptation of the early games, Claire was played by Kaya Scodelario. The two versions are quite different, with the Larter version an action heroine in a loose adaptation and the Scodelario version closer to the games’ original story.
Claire Redfield in Dead by Daylight
Claire Redfield made it into Dead by Daylight as part of the Resident Evil chapter, released in June 2021. She is not a standalone survivor with her own perks, but a Legendary Outfit, a rare cosmetic set that reskins an existing survivor into a different character entirely. Claire’s outfit is built for Jill Valentine, one of the two survivors added in that same chapter alongside Leon S. Kennedy and the killer Nemesis, known in game as The Tyrant. Her brother Chris Redfield got the same treatment as a Legendary Outfit for Leon, so the siblings arrived together even though neither one plays as themselves mechanically.
Because it is Jill’s kit underneath the skin, playing as Claire in Dead by Daylight means using Jill’s actual perks, Counterforce, Resurgence, and Blast Mine, while looking like Claire the whole time. Behaviour Interactive later gave Claire and Chris their own voice lines, character portraits, and lore entries with the follow-up Resident Evil chapters, which was a first for Legendary Outfits at the time. She has stuck around ever since as one of the more popular alternate looks in the game’s growing Resident Evil collection, alongside Ada Wong, Rebecca Chambers, and Albert Wesker.
Who Voices Claire Redfield?
Claire has been voiced by several actors over the years. In the Resident Evil 2 remake and recent appearances, she is voiced by Stephanie Panisello, who brings a grounded toughness to the modern version of the character. Earlier games and animated films featured other performers, including Alyson Court, who voiced Claire for years across the original era and became closely associated with the role. The character’s consistent presence has made her voice as recognizable as her red jacket.
