I'll take the big guy!
Picking up right from the end of God of War 2, Kratos, Gaia, and the other Titans continue their attack on Olympus. Once Kratos kills Poseidon, they go right for Zeus, but are knocked back and Gaia refuses to save Kratos, calling him a pawn for the Titans’ revenge. Kratos then falls into the River Styx where the souls of the Underworld weaken him.
Upon ascending from the river, Athena’s spirit greets him. With knowledge previously unknown to her, she gives Kratos a new weapon telling him he must kill Zeus. To do so, Kratos must extinguish the Flame of Olympus. After killing Hades, Kratos climbs back to Olympus. There he finds Gaia who is in desperate need of help. Instead, Kratos cuts off her arm as payback.
Kratos continues fighting his way through Olympus, killing titans and gods alike. When he finally finds the Flame of Olympus, he sees that Pandora’s Box is held inside. He used Pandora’s Box to kill Ares, he mistakenly believed it to be empty after that. The only way to get to the box now, is with Pandora herself. Pandora was imprisoned in the Labrynth after Kratos opened her box.
Let's fight our way through!
Kratos feels for Pandora as he would his own daughter. He even killed Hera just for disrespecting her. Once he rescues Pandora, the two head back to the Flame and are attacked by Zeus. Pandora sacrifices herself into the Flame, despite Kratos’ objections. Kratos finds Pandora’s Box empty and is furious and attacks Zeus, but Gaia shows up and attempts to kill them both.
Kratos and Zeus enter Gaia and continue fighting inside her chest. Zeus is impaled against Gaia’s heart. Believing Zeus to be dead, Kratos is then attacked by Zeus’ spirit. Before Kratos can be killed, a vision of Pandora guides Kratos through his psyche. There, he sees his wife and child. Kratos is finally able to forgive himself for what he’s done.
After regaining consciousness, Kratos forces Zeus’ spirit back into his body before beating him to death. Athena then appears demanding Kratos give back the gift that was inside of Pandora’s Box, but refuses to believe it was empty. She explains that when Zeus filled it with the evils of the world, she put hope in the box as well. Athena realizes that when Kratos opened the box, he took the hope, which was hidden by his guilt, but that the gods were corrupted by the evil when it was released. She wants Kratos to give her back the hope so she can rule over Greece. Kratos decides it’s better to die and give hope back to the people. After impaling himself on the Blade of Olympus, he seemingly dies on a mural of a phoenix.
In a post credits scene, a blood trail is seen leading away from the Blade of Olympus.
