Sega is a Japanese video game developer and publisher founded in 1960 as Rosen Enterprises and later Service Games, headquartered in Sumida, Tokyo. The company rose to prominence in the late 1980s and 1990s as Nintendo’s primary console rival before exiting the hardware business after the Dreamcast’s commercial failure in 2001. Since then Sega has operated as a third-party publisher and developer, maintaining a catalog that spans Sonic the Hedgehog, Yakuza and Like a Dragon, Total War through Creative Assembly, and Japanese RPGs through its Atlus subsidiary. Sega Sammy Holdings is the parent company.
The Sega Genesis was a huge part of my childhood. ToeJam and Earl, Sonic, Golden Axe, those games were a big part of why I fell in love with gaming in the first place.
Sega entered the home console market with the SG-1000 in Japan in 1983 before the Sega Master System launched internationally in 1986. The Sega Genesis, known as the Mega Drive outside North America, launched in Japan in 1988 and North America in 1989, positioning itself as the more powerful alternative to the NES. The Genesis library included Sonic the Hedgehog, Streets of Rage, Altered Beast, Phantasy Star, and Shining Force, and the console’s “Genesis does what Nintendon’t” marketing campaign is one of the most remembered in gaming history. The Sega Saturn in 1994 stumbled against the PlayStation despite strong software. The Dreamcast in 1999 was genuinely ahead of its time, featuring a built-in modem for online play and a strong launch library, but Sony’s PlayStation 2 announcement and a weakened Sega financial position led to the console being discontinued in 2001, ending Sega’s hardware ambitions.
Sonic the Hedgehog launched in June 1991 as Sega’s answer to Nintendo’s Mario and became the best-selling game on the Genesis. The franchise has since expanded across dozens of platforms and media, including animated series, films, and comics. Sonic Frontiers in 2022 was the franchise’s open-world pivot, received better than many expected after years of inconsistent quality. Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the 2024 film, became the highest-grossing video game movie ever made at the time of release, earning over $460 million worldwide.
The Yakuza series, developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, launched in Japan in 2005 and spent years as a cult franchise in the West before a resurgence driven by Yakuza 0 in 2015 and its 2017 Western release. The series follows members of the Japanese yakuza through crime dramas set in meticulously recreated Japanese cities. Yakuza: Like a Dragon in 2020 shifted the protagonist from Kiryu to Ichiban Kasuga and changed the combat from brawler to turn-based RPG. Like a Dragon: Ishin and Like a Dragon: Gaiden followed before Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth in January 2024 became the highest-rated game in the series.
Sega acquired Atlus in 2013 following Index Corporation’s bankruptcy, adding the Persona series, Shin Megami Tensei, and Catherine to its portfolio. Atlus operates as a largely independent subsidiary and has continued releasing critically acclaimed RPGs under Sega’s ownership including Persona 5 Royal, Shin Megami Tensei V, and Metaphor: ReFantazio. The acquisition significantly strengthened Sega’s position in the Japanese RPG market.
Sega’s Western publishing arm includes Creative Assembly, developer of the Total War series and Alien: Isolation, Amplitude Studios, developer of the Endless series, and Two Point Studios, developer of Two Point Hospital and Two Point Campus. Sega Europe oversees these studios and publishes their output globally. The Creative Assembly relationship in particular gives Sega a consistent presence in the PC strategy genre through Total War’s annual release cadence.
