Golden Axe is a side scrolling hack and slash series created and published by Sega. The first game in the series was released on January 27, 1989. The series has been released for arcades, Sega Genesis, Mega-CD, Game Gear, Master System, Sega Mega-Play, GameTap, IBM PC, Amiga, Atari ST, Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64, PC Engine CD, WonderSwan, ZX Spectrum, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Virtual Console, iOS, Android, and Microsoft Windows. Throughout the years they’ve been released by themselves and in other collections.
The first game sees the king of Yuria and his daughters have been captured by Death Adder. He keeps them in the castle along with the Golden Axe and threatens the people he will destroy them both if they do not accept him as their new king. Three warriors take it upon themselves to take back the kingdom.
The three heroes return in the second game when they have to save Yuria from a new evil lead by Dark Guld who has stolen the Golden Axe. It plays a lot like the first game.
In the third game, three new heroes take center stags. The Prince of Darkness has stolen the Golden Axe and it’s up to new heroes to get it back. The game differs from the others as you choose branching paths to get to your destination so each playthrough could see different areas and enemies.
