Signalis is a survival horror game developed by the two-person studio rose-engine and published by Humble Games and PLAYISM. It released on October 27, 2022 for Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. Built in Unity with a deliberately grainy, PS1-era art style, Signalis follows a Replika technician named Elster who wakes from cryosleep and goes looking for a lost partner named Ariane Yeong. It is a single-player game rated Mature for strong violence and gore. The game is a Play Anywhere title, so if it's bought on Xbox PC or on console, it's playable on the other. That is how I plan on playing the game.
The bones of the game come straight from the classics. Anyone who spent time with Resident Evil will recognize the punishing six-slot inventory and the constant math of what to carry, while the dread and dream-logic owe a heavy debt to Silent Hill. If you have played The Evil Within, the mix of scarce ammo, backtracking, and psychological horror will feel familiar.
Signalis Gameplay: Survival Horror Inspired by Resident Evil and Silent Hill
Signalis is built on tension and scarcity. Elster carries only six inventory slots, so every key item, health kit, and spare magazine forces a decision about what to leave behind. Ammunition is limited, enemies rarely stay down for good, and burning a corpse to stop it from reviving costs resources you may not be able to spare. Progress comes from exploring the mining outpost, solving cipher and radio puzzles, and shuttling key items between locked areas.
The Replikas hunting Elster are android units that have degraded into hostile, glitching threats. The game rewards patience and route planning over combat, and it leans on limited saves and a claustrophobic map to keep the pressure high from the opening hour to the last.
Signalis Characters: Elster, Ariane, and the Replikas
Elster is the playable protagonist, an LSTR-type Replika technician searching for the person she promised to protect. Ariane Yeong is the human gestalt pilot Elster is looking for, and the emotional core of the entire story. Along the way Elster crosses paths with Adler (an ADLR unit), Falke (an FKLR unit), Isa Itou, and Alina Seo, while the MNHR unit Mynah serves as the first major boss. The relationships between these characters, and the blurring line between memory and reality, drive the plot far more than the combat does.
Signalis Story Explained
Signalis is set in the authoritarian Eusan Nation, a bleak far-future society built on Replika labor and a phenomenon called bioresonance. Elster crash-lands and awakens aboard the wreck connected to the Penrose program, then descends into the mining outpost S-23 Sierpinski on the frozen planet Leng. As she searches for Ariane, her memories begin bleeding into the world around her, and locations, characters, and timelines start to fold over one another.
The deeper Elster goes, the less the outpost behaves like a real place. The story pulls in themes from Robert W. Chambers and H.P. Lovecraft, with the figure of The King in Yellow surfacing as reality breaks down. Signalis is built to be interpreted rather than solved, so the plot is intentionally ambiguous, and much of what happens is meant to be read as grief, love, and loss rendered as horror.
Signalis Endings Explained
Signalis has three main endings plus a secret fourth, and the game decides which one you get based on how you play rather than a single final choice. The Memory, Promise, and Leave endings are weighted by factors like how often Elster dies, how long the playthrough takes, and how much health she holds near the finish. The hidden Artifact ending is tied to collecting specific items and solving an extra layer of the puzzle involving the Flower and the King in Yellow.
Because rose-engine has stayed deliberately quiet about a definitive reading, none of the endings is framed as the canonical one. Each is treated as a valid conclusion to the same story about Elster and Ariane. The community is still debating them years later.
