Overwatch 2 is a 5v5 team based multiplayer game. It was created and published by Blizzard Entertainment on May 24, 2016 for the former game and October 4, 2022 for the second game. The game was initially released for Windows, Playstation 4, and Xbox One. On October 15, 2019 it was released for the Nintendo Switch, developed by Iron Galaxy. On October 3, 2022 Overwatch 1 servers were shut down and Overwatch 2 servers went online. The second game has a number of changes, for instance changing from 6v6 to 5v5.
Overwatch had a number of heroes introduced in its six year run, but never really a plan on how to keep the game going long term until Overwatch 2 came out.
One of the biggest changes between Overwatch 1 and Overwatch 2 was the removal of loot boxes. In its place a battle pass system was implemented. In it there was a number of cosmetics and the introduction of a mythic level of cosmetic, of which only one character got per season. After its initial launch with three new characters, every other season since has a new character introduced.
