Earlier this week, it was revealed that new heroes in Overwatch 2 would be unlocked in their free tier Battle Pass system. This means that you will potentially need to grind hours of the game in order to play any new hero. On the other hand you can pay to unlock the tiers instantly, essentially making it pay to win. The first character to be done this way is the new healer, Kiriko. Alternatively, Kiriko will be available at launch with the purchase of the Watch Point pack. What happens after the season is over? They said that you would still be able to unlock previous heroes in some way.
Gamers are upset with this news and they have not been silent about it. Twitter and Reddit are full of disappointed and upset people. Some have even said that it would kill their game before it even launches.
Microsoft’s Purchase
Assuming that Microsoft’s purchase goes through, it is possible that the way the heroes are unlocked changes. The way Halo handles their battle pass system is that you can go back and complete previous battle passes once the season is over. Halo’s battle pass system is also only for unlocking cosmetics though and not abilities or anything that could potentially change the game. In a competitive game like Overwatch not having a hero unlocked could be the difference between a win or not, so we will see if Microsoft or even Blizzard change their plans.
Kiriko Leaked
Less than a day after the battle pass stuff came to light, Kiriko’s reveal trailer was leaked. You can watch it below, but it is in Spanish only.
What do you think of the way they plan to do their battle pass? Should battle passes only contain non-game changing things such as emotes and cosmetics? Let us know your thoughts.
