Her Story is an interactive movie game written and directed by Sam Barlow. The game was released on June 24, 2015 for iOS, OSX, and Windows. On June 25, 2016 it was released for Android.
The player takes on the role of an unnamed character who accesses an old police database to uncover the story behind the disappearance and death of Simon Smith in 1994. The database contains a series of video clips from multiple police interviews with Simon’s wife, Hannah Smith. However, the videos are fragmented, out of order, and must be unlocked by searching specific keywords. As the player watches these clips, they begin to piece together the puzzle of what happened to Simon.
Initially, the story revolves around Hannah recounting her version of events, but it soon becomes clear that something is amiss. Through careful observation and searching, the player discovers that Hannah has a twin sister named Eve, who has been secretly impersonating her in some of the interviews. The twins had a complicated relationship from childhood, marked by secrecy and a pact to share everything in their lives, including their identities. The game reveals that Eve, who grew up hidden in the attic to keep their twinship a secret, eventually developed romantic feelings for Simon. As tensions between the sisters escalated, Eve’s jealousy and desire for a life outside the shadows drove her to become more involved in Hannah’s life, ultimately leading to Simon’s death.
The narrative becomes a tangled web of deception, betrayal, and hidden truths. The player must discern which sister is speaking in each clip to fully understand the story. Through careful examination of the videos, it becomes apparent that Eve was involved in Simon’s death, possibly out of desperation to protect her secret life or as an act of revenge for his rejection. The game culminates without a definitive conclusion, allowing the player to interpret the events and motivations based on the evidence gathered. The ending reveals that the character you play as is Sarah, Eve’s daughter. A chat window asks Sarah if she understands her mother’s actions, and asks to meet outside.
