Grand Theft Auto VI is the next mainline entry in Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto series, launching November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. It is the first mainline GTA in more than a decade, following Grand Theft Auto V, and it moves the action back to Vice City inside the wider fictional state of Leonida, Rockstar's version of modern day Florida. The game stars two playable protagonists, Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval, a criminal couple whose relationship sits at the center of the story.
Grand Theft Auto VI release date and platforms
Grand Theft Auto VI releases on Thursday, November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That date arrived after two delays. Rockstar originally targeted a 2025 window, then pushed the game to May 26, 2026, before settling on the November 19 date in a Newswire post. Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar's parent company, has tied its fiscal 2027 projections directly to the launch, which is a strong signal the date holds this time.
What is Grand Theft Auto VI about? Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos in Leonida
The Grand Theft Auto VI story follows Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval, a pair Rockstar frames as a modern Bonnie and Clyde. Lucia is the first female lead in a mainline single-player GTA. Rockstar's own setup describes two people who have always known the deck is stacked against them, then an easy score goes wrong and drops them into a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida.
Lucia grew up in Liberty City before ending up incarcerated at the Leonida Penitentiary, where the trailers first introduce her in a prison jumpsuit. Jason is a former soldier turned drug runner tied to the Leonida Keys. Their arcs are personal rather than purely money driven, with Lucia's story rooted in her family and Jason's in the debts he cannot outrun.
Grand Theft Auto VI setting: Vice City and the state of Leonida
Grand Theft Auto VI is set in Leonida, Rockstar's fictional take on Florida, with a reimagined modern day Vice City at its heart. Beyond the neon of Vice City, Rockstar has confirmed locations including the Leonida Keys, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, Grassrivers, and Mount Kalaga National Park. The map spans beaches, swampland, small towns, and open wilderness, and each region pulls Lucia and Jason into different kinds of trouble. Vice City sells wealth, nightlife, and celebrity while hiding the corruption underneath, while the Keys connect Jason to the smugglers he already knows.
Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay and dual protagonists
Grand Theft Auto VI brings back the dual-protagonist system introduced in Grand Theft Auto V, refined so players switch between Lucia and Jason during the story. The 26 minute Extended Look showcased seamless character switching, reworked melee and gunplay, and heavy environmental detail. Rockstar says the game features more than 600,000 unique NPC animations, feeding a reactive world where civilians respond to threats, react to conversations, and carry on ambient activities. All of the official footage so far was captured in-game on a base PlayStation 5.
Grand Theft Auto VI trailers and the Extended Look gameplay reveal
Rockstar has released three official looks at Grand Theft Auto VI. Trailer 1 arrived December 5, 2023, Trailer 2 followed on May 6, 2025, and Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look debuted August 27, 2026, running first as a Netflix exclusive for six hours before hitting Rockstar's YouTube channel the same night. Trailer 2 is embedded below.
Grand Theft Auto VI editions, price, and pre-order bonuses
Grand Theft Auto VI comes in two editions. The Standard Edition is priced at $79.99 and the Ultimate Edition at $99.99 in the US. Pre-orders opened June 25, 2026. The highlighted pre-order bonus is the Vintage Vice City Pack, and digital listings also mention one month of GTA+ with pre-order, subject to redemption terms. Both editions are sold digitally, and only the Standard Edition ships with a code in a box.
When preorders went live, I preordered the $99.99 version for Xbox Series X. I played a lot of GTA V across all console generations it's been out on as well as on PC. This is my most anticipated game of 2026.
Is Grand Theft Auto VI coming to PC and Game Pass?
There is no confirmed PC version of Grand Theft Auto VI at launch, and Rockstar has not announced a PC release date. Based on the studio's history, a PC port is likely eventually, probably a year or more after the console version. I will more than likely buy it again once it is released for PC. PC is a different experience. With all the customization and modding you can do, it's a different kind of fun playing the same game.
As a third-party Rockstar title rather than an Xbox first-party game, Grand Theft Auto VI is not expected to arrive on Xbox Game Pass at launch, and no subscription release has been announced. Honestly though, it's much too expensive of a game to come to a subscription service at launch. Grand Theft Auto is a franchise that people are going to buy and putting it on a subscription service right away doesn't make much sense.
