Layers of Fear is a psychological horror franchise developed and published by Bloober Team, the Polish studio behind The Medium and the Silent Hill 2 remake. Built around first-person exploration of environments that shift and distort in response to the player’s progress, the franchise focuses on protagonists consumed by creative obsession to the point of psychological collapse. Three games have released since 2016, with Layers of Fear 3 announced in February 2026 on the franchise’s tenth anniversary. No release date, platforms, or gameplay have been revealed for the third entry.
The original Layers of Fear released February 16, 2016, for PC, with PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions following in October 2016. The game places the player in the perspective of a Victorian-era painter returning to his mansion home to complete what he calls his magnum opus. The environments around the painter distort and rearrange themselves as he moves deeper into his obsession, with the rooms of the house becoming a physical representation of his deteriorating mental state. Hallways collapse, doors open into impossible spaces, and the paintings on the walls shift as the protagonist’s grip on reality loosens. The game’s visual design and atmospheric direction received significant praise for establishing a new approach to first-person horror that relied on environmental manipulation rather than combat or direct threat.
Layers of Fear: Inheritance, released August 2, 2016, told the same story from the perspective of the painter’s daughter returning to the house as an adult. The expansion recontextualized the events players had witnessed in the original game by presenting the husband and father’s obsession as seen through the child who lived with its consequences.
Layers of Fear 2 released May 28, 2019, for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, shifting the setting and protagonist entirely. The second game follows a Hollywood actor who answers the call of a mysterious director, voiced by horror legend Tony Todd, to star in a film being shot aboard an abandoned ocean liner. The line between the actor’s performance, the director’s demands, and the actor’s own suppressed identity becomes the game’s central disorientation, with the ship’s environments transforming to reflect scenes from the film being shot aboard them. Layers of Fear 2 used the ocean liner’s Art Deco architecture and the golden age of Hollywood cinema as its visual palette, distinguishing it significantly from the Victorian gothic of the first game.
The 2023 Layers of Fear, released June 15, 2023, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, and Windows, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version following December 19, 2025, is simultaneously a remake of the first two games and a new story chapter that connects them. Developed by Bloober Team and Anshar Studios and built in Unreal Engine 5 with Lumen global illumination, the game presents three interwoven stories: the painter from the original, the actor from the second game, and a new character, a writer on a lighthouse who is living in the time after both previous stories. The writer’s narrative provides a frame and connection that neither original game had, changing the meaning of events in the previous two stories. PC Gamer awarded it a 9 out of 10. A Nintendo Switch 2 version followed in December 2025.
Bloober Team announced Layers of Fear 3 on February 16, 2026, the tenth anniversary of the original game’s release, through a live-action teaser trailer featuring an actor reciting William Blake’s poem The Sick Rose in a grand room. No gameplay, platforms, release window, or story details were revealed alongside the announcement. The studio also announced a series of novels based on the franchise, the first written by Marta Bijan and scheduled for release later in 2026, alongside discounts on the existing catalog in celebration of the anniversary. Bloober Team is simultaneously developing a remake of the original Silent Hill and Cronos: The New Dawn alongside the third Layers of Fear entry.
