Fable 2 is an action role playing game developed by Lionhead Studios and published by Microsoft Game Studios. It was released on October 21, 2008…
Fable is a British action role-playing franchise published by Xbox Game Studios, set in the fairytale world of Albion where players build a hero whose morality, appearance, and reputation shift based on their choices. The original trilogy was developed by Lionhead Studios under Peter Molyneux from 2004 through 2012, with the franchise going dormant following Lionhead’s closure in 2016. Playground Games, the Leamington Spa studio behind the Forza Horizon series, has been developing a new Fable reboot since 2017. The game was announced at the Xbox Games Showcase in July 2020, delayed from 2025 to 2026, and delayed again to February 2027 at the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7, 2026.
Fable released September 14, 2004, for the original Xbox, developed by Lionhead Studios and published by Microsoft Game Studios. Peter Molyneux, who had previously created Populous, Theme Park, Dungeon Keeper, and Black and White, directed the game around a morality system in which the player’s actions shifted their character’s physical appearance toward angelic or demonic extremes alongside their reputation in the world. The game’s pre-release marketing, which promised features including persistent aging, environmental memory, and dynamic world consequences, generated expectations the shipped product could not fully meet, establishing a pattern of ambitious promises and partial delivery that followed Molyneux’s work through his career. Despite the discourse around missing features, Fable was commercially successful and warmly received for its humor, its world, and the satisfaction of its core systems. Fable: The Lost Chapters, released in 2005, added a substantial extension to the original game’s content.
Fable II released October 21, 2008, for Xbox 360, introducing a dog companion, two-player cooperative play, and a Albion set several hundred years after the first game’s events with improved weaponry and architecture. Fable III followed October 26, 2010, moving the player into the role of a monarch managing a kingdom rather than purely a hero completing quests, adding a social and economic management layer to the franchise’s structure. Fable: The Journey in October 2012 was a Kinect-based on-rails entry that marked Lionhead’s final game before Microsoft closed the studio in April 2016 alongside the cancellation of Fable Legends, a multiplayer spinoff in development for several years.
Playground Games created a second development team in 2017, separate from the Forza Horizon group, to develop the new Fable. The studio chose to approach the project as a reboot rather than a direct sequel, allowing them to tell their own story within Albion without being bound by the trilogy’s continuity. A guiding document from Lionhead’s own development archive, which Playground had access to, described the IP’s essential character as fairytale, not fantasy, a phrase that became one of the new game’s three development pillars alongside its Britishness of humor and tone and the player’s freedom of choice.
Fable was officially announced with a cinematic CGI trailer at the Xbox Games Showcase in July 2020. A second trailer at the 2024 Xbox showcase introduced a mockumentary-style presentation featuring Matt King as Humphry the Golden, establishing the Office and Peep Show-influenced comedic register the team had developed. Writers Anna Megill and Andrew Walsh lead the narrative team, with Eidos-Montreal providing combat system development support across a team of approximately one hundred supporting developers. The game is built in Playground’s ForzaTech engine and directed by Ralph Fulton.
Fable was delayed from its original 2025 window to 2026 in February 2025. At the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7, 2026, Microsoft announced a second delay to February 23, 2027. The game will release on PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X and Series S simultaneously, making it the first Fable game to release on a PlayStation platform. It will be available on Xbox Game Pass on day one. Pre-orders across standard, premium, and collector’s editions are now available.
