Uncharted 4 Plot

In 1999, a few years before Nathan met Elena in the first game, Nathan, Rafe, and Nathan’s brother Sam are in a Panamanian jail to get access to Henry Avery’s first mate cell. They are searching for the treasure of Henry Avery. In the cell, Nathan finds a hollow idol. The warden, who up until now was in on it, demands a cut of the treasure. Rafe doesn’t like these new terms and kills him, causing the guards to come after them. Nathan and Rafe successfully escape, but Sam is shot and without any other option, is left for dead.

The Present

Fifteen years after leaving Ubar, Nathan is retired with his wife, Elena. He misses the excitement of hunting treasures though. One day Sam stops by after explaining that he’s been incarcerated this whole time. He says he escaped with drug lord Hector Alcazar and now is being forced to find him Henry Avery’s treasure. Nathan decides to help Sam, but lies to his wife to do it and says he’s taking a job in Malaysia.

The pair team up with Sully and steal a duplicate idol from an auction in Italy. While they enact their plan, they come into conflict with a mercenary, Nadine Ross, and her employer Rafe. After all these years, Rafe is still searching for Avery’s treasure for himself. Once they have the idol,they find a map  that leads them to St. Dismas’ Cathedral in Scotland. They find a hidden temple with a map pointing to King’s Bay in Madagascar.

In Madagascar, they learn that Avery and other pirate captains pooled their treasures. The group follow clues and discover a map to Libertalia, a fabled pirate utopia. When they get back to their hotel room they find a pissed off Elena. She was initially mad that Nathan lied to her about the job, but when she finds out that he has a brother he never mentioned, she storms off. Nathan sends Sully after her and the brothers head off to Libertalia.

Libertalia

Once on the island, the pair are cornered by Rafe. Rafe informs Nathan that Sam was released two years prior and Sam’s story is a lie. Sam was working with Rafe until he double crossed him to start the search over with Nathan. Rafe decides he needs Sam, so he goes to shoot Nathan, but Sam gets in the way and accidentally knocks Nathan off a cliff.

Elena rescues Nathan who tells her about his past. Their mother was a historian who was searching for Libertalia. After her death, her associate took in all of her research. After breaking into the associate’s house and almost getting caught by the police, they decide to change their name to Drake to honor their mother’s theory about Francis Drake.

New Dayton

In New Dayton, a city in Libertalia, Nathan and Elena find that Libertalia eventually failed because of conflict over the treasure. Thomas Tew and Avery poisoned the others and left with the treasure, until Tew betrayed Avery as well. They rescue Sam, but his greed soon overcomes him and decides to go after the treasure. Nathan goes after Sam and finds Avery’s ship filled with treasure in a cavern.

Nadine believes the risk is too big and refuses to do anymore work for Rafe, but he bribes her men. On the ship, Sam trips one of Avery’s traps causing a fire and pinning himself under a board. Nathan comes face to face with Rafe and Nadine, but Nadine betrays Rafe and leaves him with Sam and Nathan. Nathan and Rafe sword fight, with Nathan eventually dropping a bundle of treasure on Rafe, killing him. They return to Sully’s plane and the group escapes.

Sam and Sully head off for a new job while Nathan and Elena head home. She tells him that Sam stole some of the gold and gave it to her. She buys the salvage company where Nathan worked and plans to revive her old show. Years later, the two have become successful and have a daughter Cassie who finds relics from their past adventures. Nathan decides it’s time to tell his daughter about their adventures.
