Ready or Not is a sharp horror comedy that blends survival thrills with biting satire. The film follows Grace, a newlywed who discovers her husband’s wealthy family has a deadly tradition: she must survive a nightlong game of hide and seek while being hunted throughout their mansion. What begins as a twisted ritual quickly becomes a bloody fight for survival, with Grace transforming into one of the most memorable horror heroines of the decade.
The film thrives on its high concept premise and delivers a mix of gore and humor that rarely lets up. Samara Weaving anchors the story with a standout performance, balancing vulnerability and ferocity. The mansion setting adds atmosphere, with ornate rooms and secret passages that heighten tension. The pacing is tight, keeping the story lean and unpredictable, while the script injects dark comedy that makes the violence both shocking and absurdly funny. Even the gore had some humor behind it that I couldn’t help but laugh at.
Ready or Not Cast
Samara Weaving delivers one of the best horror performances of the decade as Grace, carrying the film through every tonal shift from terrified bride to resourceful survivor. Adam Brody plays Daniel Le Domas, the conflicted brother-in-law who provides most of the film’s moral ambiguity. Andie MacDowell is quietly menacing as the family matriarch, and Mark O’Brien plays Alex, Grace’s husband whose loyalties keep the tension alive throughout. The family as a whole is played with just enough absurdity to be funny without losing the genuine threat they pose.
Ready or Not Social Commentary
Some character development is uneven, with the eccentric family members played more for caricature than depth. The social commentary on wealth and privilege is present but not explored beyond surface level. Then again, just being surface level could have been part of the point, since the rich will do anything to remain that way and that’s pretty much all there is to it. A few tonal shifts lean too heavily into absurdity, briefly undercutting the suspense.
Is Ready or Not Worth Watching?
Ready or Not succeeds as a crowd pleasing horror comedy and is wickedly entertaining. It didn’t go the way I expected it to and was not the movie I thought I would be watching, which made it that much better. It is bold, funny, and bloody, with enough heart to keep you invested in Grace’s fight for survival.
