Annapurna Interactive

Annapurna Interactive is an American video game publisher founded in 2016 as a division of Annapurna Pictures, the independent film production company behind Her, Booksmart, and Annihilation. Based in West Hollywood, California, the label built one of the most acclaimed catalogs in indie publishing before a mass staff resignation in September 2024 restructured the company. Nathan Gary, who led the label, and almost the entire staff departed simultaneously in a dispute with Annapurna Pictures’ parent company over independence and ownership terms.

The Catalog

Annapurna Interactive’s publishing catalog became the defining collection of prestige indie games of its era. What Remains of Edith Finch, developed by Giant Sparrow and released in 2017, won BAFTA Game of the Year. Outer Wilds, developed by Mobius Digital and released in 2019, is frequently cited among the greatest games ever made. Sayonara Wild Hearts in 2019 was a critically acclaimed rhythm action game. Neon White in 2022, developed by Angel Matrix, won Best Debut Indie Game at The Game Awards. Stray in 2022, developed by BlueTwelve Studio, became the label’s biggest commercial success and sold over ten million copies. The catalog also includes Donut County, Twelve Minutes, Telling Lies, Assemble with Care, and Kentucky Route Zero, representing a consistent curatorial vision around games as artistic experiences.

The 2024 Resignation and Restructuring

In September 2024, Nathan Gary and nearly the entire Annapurna Interactive staff resigned simultaneously. Reports indicated the dispute centered on the team’s desire to spin out Annapurna Interactive as an independent company separate from Annapurna Pictures. Megan Ellison, who controls Annapurna Pictures, declined those terms. The resignation affected around 25 people. Several developers who had games in progress with Annapurna Interactive were directly impacted, with some projects changing publisher arrangements as a result. Annapurna Interactive continued operating under new leadership, with Ellison retaining control of the label and its catalog. Blade Runner 2033: Labyrinth, developed by Alcon Interactive, remains in development under the Annapurna banner.

Legacy and Influence

Annapurna Interactive’s catalog from 2017 through 2024 represented an unusually coherent publishing identity, built around games that prioritized emotional resonance and artistic ambition over genre conventions. The label demonstrated that indie games with strong critical reputations and word-of-mouth appeal could build a publisher brand comparable to major studios. Whether the restructured label under new leadership maintains that identity or shifts direction is an open question. The catalog itself, including What Remains of Edith Finch, Outer Wilds, and Stray, remains one of the strongest bodies of published work in the medium’s history.
