Goat Simulator

Goat Simulator is a comedy sandbox franchise developed by Coffee Stain Studios and published through the studio’s own Coffee Stain Publishing label, originating as an April Fool’s joke game jam prototype in 2013 before becoming a genuine commercial release in April 2014. The franchise follows a destructive goat named Pilgor through increasingly chaotic open-world environments, rewarding property destruction and unpredictable physics interactions over conventional game objectives. Goat Simulator sold millions of copies across PC, console, and mobile, and Goat Simulator 3, the deliberately numbered sequel that skips over a nonexistent second game, released November 17, 2022. A remaster of the original arrived November 7, 2024.

Goat Simulator (2014)

Coffee Stain Studios was formed in 2010 by nine students at the University of Skövde in Sweden, building a reputation through the tower defense game Sanctum and its sequel before Goat Simulator emerged from an internal game jam. The game began as a joke prototype never intended for release, but internal testing produced footage so entertaining that Coffee Stain posted it online and the response convinced them to ship the game. Goat Simulator released April 1, 2014, for PC, the release date a deliberate joke, and became a cultural moment built around the contrast between the word simulator, which implies precision and accuracy, and the complete physical chaos the game delivered. The game sold millions of copies through Steam and expanded through downloadable content packs adding zombies, space travel, and a massively multiplayer online parody. Ports reached Xbox consoles in September 2014, PlayStation platforms in April 2015, and Nintendo Switch in January 2019.

Goat Simulator Remastered released November 7, 2024, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, and PC, updating the original with improved graphics, reworked mutators, and all original downloadable content included.

Goat Simulator 3 (2022)

Coffee Stain North, a Stockholm-based subsidiary of Coffee Stain Studios formed from the acquisition of Gone North Games in 2018, developed the sequel while the main studio focused on Satisfactory. Goat Simulator 3 was announced at Summer Game Fest 2022 through a trailer deliberately designed to mimic the Dead Island 2 announcement footage before revealing itself, a piece of marketing built entirely around the surprise. The numbered title skipping from one to three, with no Goat Simulator 2 existing, was an intentional joke by the developers rather than an error. The game released November 17, 2022, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, and PC via the Epic Games Store, with subsequent ports to Steam and mobile in 2023, Nintendo Switch in August 2024, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in October 2024, and Nintendo Switch 2 on April 1, 2026, the April Fools date chosen deliberately. The game expanded the formula with four-player cooperative play across the new open world of San Angora Island and a wider range of goat customization options.
