Sonic Origins is a video game compilation of a bunch of the old Sonic games. It was created by Sonic Team and published by Sega….
Sonic Team is the Sega studio responsible for the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, one of the most recognizable names in gaming history. The group coalesced in 1990 around Yuji Naka, Naoto Ohshima, and Hirokazu Yasuhara, whose goal was to create a Sega mascot that could compete with Nintendo’s Mario. The result was Sonic the Hedgehog in 1991, a game built around speed, momentum, and a distinctive visual style that became one of the defining releases of the 16-bit era. I grew up with Sonic, and the original trilogy on the Genesis was a huge part of my gaming childhood.
The Genesis years defined what Sonic was. Sonic the Hedgehog (1991), Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992), which introduced Tails and the Spin Dash, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 combined with Sonic and Knuckles (1994) represent the peak of the franchise for a large part of the fanbase. These games built their identity around speed as a reward for mastering the level design rather than just holding right on the d-pad, a distinction that sometimes gets lost in how the series is remembered. I have tried so many times to get to alternate routes in Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s Chemical Plant level.
Sonic Adventure (1998 in Japan, 1999 in the West) was Sonic Team’s attempt to bring the franchise into the 3D era, and it landed better than its reputation suggests today. Multiple playable characters, a real narrative, and the Chao Garden made it ambitious. Sonic Adventure 2 (2001) followed and has remained a cult favorite partly because of its story and partly because Shadow the Hedgehog became one of the franchise’s most talked-about characters. The 2006 Sonic the Hedgehog game, often called Sonic ’06, is a different story entirely. Rushed out for the console’s holiday launch, it became the franchise’s most criticized release and a reference point for everything that could go wrong with the series. Sonic Team spent years trying to recover from it.
Sonic Generations (2011), which celebrated the franchise’s 20th anniversary by pairing classic and modern gameplay, is broadly considered the strongest 3D Sonic release and a rare moment where both sides of the fanbase were satisfied. Sonic Forces (2017) repeated some of the same structural mistakes as the weaker entries and received a mixed reception. Sonic Frontiers (2022) was the studio’s most significant shift in years, moving Sonic into an open-world format across the Starfall Islands with a story that surprised people who had written the franchise off. It sold well and pushed the conversation around Sonic in a more positive direction than it had been in years.
Worth separating from Sonic Team’s own output is Sonic Mania (2017), which was developed by Christian Whitehead, Headcannon, and PagodaWest Games and published by Sega. Sonic Team did not develop it, but the fact that Sega handed the 2D Sonic franchise to outside developers who had built their reputations on fan projects and unofficial ports tells its own story about where the confidence was in 2017. Sonic Mania was received as the best Sonic game in decades by a large part of the community.
