Campo Santo was an American independent video game developer founded in San Francisco on September 18, 2013, by Sean Vanaman and Jake Rodkin, both former Telltale Games writers, alongside Mark of the Ninja lead designer Nels Anderson and graphic artist Olly Moss. The studio was acquired by Valve in April 2018 and relocated to Bellevue, Washington, where it has operated as part of Valve’s development team since. Campo Santo developed one released game, Firewatch, and had a second game in development before the acquisition changed the studio’s direction.
Vanaman and Rodkin left Telltale after co-writing The Walking Dead Season One in 2012, one of the most critically acclaimed games of that year. Rather than continue at a larger studio, they co-founded Campo Santo to make games on their own terms with a small team. Nels Anderson, who had designed Mark of the Ninja at Klei Entertainment, and Olly Moss, a graphic artist known for his film poster work, joined as co-founders. The studio also published the Campo Santo Quarterly Review, a literary journal, reflecting its broader interest in storytelling across formats.
Firewatch released on February 9, 2016, co-published with Panic. The game casts the player as Henry, a man escaping personal problems by taking a seasonal fire lookout job in Wyoming’s Shoshone National Forest in 1989. Communication with supervisor Delilah, voiced by Cissy Jones, drives the narrative through radio conversations while Henry explores the wilderness. It sold over one million copies within its first year and over 1.5 million by the time of the Valve acquisition. It won awards for writing and is frequently cited as one of the best narrative games of 2016. A film adaptation was announced in partnership with Good Universe, though its current status is unclear.
Valve acquired Campo Santo in April 2018. The studio announced it would continue development on its second game, In the Valley of Gods, a first-person adventure set in 1920s Egypt following two women making a silent film during an archaeological expedition, as a Valve project. In July 2019 development was put on hold as former Campo Santo staff, including Vanaman, shifted to Valve projects including Half-Life: Alyx. The game has not resumed development publicly and its future remains uncertain. The team of twelve that joined Valve has since contributed to various Valve initiatives rather than returning to In the Valley of Gods.
Campo Santo was established by industry veterans with a focus on storytelling and immersive world-building. The studio quickly gained recognition for its debut title, Firewatch, which became a critical and commercial success.
