343 Industries

343 Industries was an American video game developer based in Redmond, Washington, founded in 2007 by Bonnie Ross as a first party Xbox Game Studios studio. The studio was created specifically to take over the Halo franchise after Bungie regained its independence from Microsoft that same year. The name comes from 343 Guilty Spark, the AI monitor character from the original Halo games. In October 2024 the studio rebranded as Halo Studios, the name it operates under today.

343 Industries and the Halo Franchise

343 Industries first worked alongside Bungie on downloadable content for Halo: Reach before taking full control of the franchise. Their first major release was Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary in 2011, a remaster of the original Bungie game. Halo 4 followed in 2012 and began the studio’s Reclaimer Saga, a new trilogy continued by Halo 5: Guardians in 2015. Halo: The Master Chief Collection released in 2014 and compiled the first six mainline Halo games into one package for Xbox One. Halo Infinite launched in December 2021 and concluded the Reclaimer Saga, with the studio supporting it through updates before shifting focus to what would eventually become Halo Campaign Evolved under the Halo Studios name.

Leadership Changes at 343 Industries

Bonnie Ross stepped down as studio head in September 2022 following the mixed reception to Halo Infinite’s campaign and live service components. Pierre Hintze took over as studio head, with Bryan Koski becoming general manager of the franchise. The leadership transition coincided with significant layoffs at the studio as part of broader Microsoft cuts across the gaming division. Under Hintze the studio announced its rebrand to Halo Studios in October 2024 alongside a shift to Unreal Engine 5 for future development.
