American McGee’s Alice is a dark reimagining of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, transforming it into a psychological horror game. The story follows Alice Liddell, who, after losing her family in a tragic house fire, falls into deep psychological distress and is confined to Rutledge Asylum. After years of institutionalization, Alice mentally retreats into Wonderland, only to find that it has become a twisted and nightmarish reflection of her fractured psyche. The once whimsical world is now distorted, filled with grotesque creatures and hostile environments that symbolize her trauma and deteriorating mental state.

Let's fight this... thing
As Alice navigates through this warped Wonderland, she encounters familiar characters such as the Cheshire Cat, Mad Hatter, and Queen of Hearts—each now monstrous representations of her inner struggles. The Mad Hatter, once eccentric, has become a cruel scientist experimenting on living creatures, while the Queen of Hearts embodies Alice’s suppressed guilt and emotional turmoil. Armed with the Vorpal Blade, Alice must fight through corrupted landscapes, solving puzzles and battling nightmarish foes as she pieces together her shattered memories. The journey is more than just survival; it is a battle for self-reclamation, forcing Alice to confront her deepest fears.

In the end, Alice faces the Queen of Hearts, the physical manifestation of her pain and the source of Wonderland’s corruption. By defeating the Queen, Alice regains control over her mind, restoring Wonderland to a semblance of its former state. With her sanity seemingly restored, Alice can finally leave her psychological prison
