No, don't jump!
I started streaming Agents of Mayhem on August 12, 2019 on Twitch. I knew nothing about the game, but I love Saints Row, so I was really hoping the humor would be the same. Agents of Mayhem turned out to be a cross between Saints Row and Crackdown. Not a bad game for what it was, but it was more than a little buggy and the controls weren’t the best.
Despite the controls and the bugs, Agents of Mayhem was an okay game and I really enjoyed it since I loved the Saints Row series so much. Unfortunately one of the bugs prevented me from finishing the game at all, since it didn’t give me anymore story based missions.
Hey, what's up, girl?
Persephone Brimstone was once the Minister of Gluttony in the supervillain organization L.E.G.I.O.N, which sought world domination. She was also married to Lucas Brimstone, the Minister of Envy. L.E.G.I.O.N planned to reveal themselves through a worldwide assault called “Devil’s Night” to overthrow global governments. However, Persephone discovered that their leader, the Morningstar, intended to harness Dark Matter’s power to alter reality and achieve godhood. She thwarted this plan and escaped with an airship named the ARK. In retaliation, L.E.G.I.O.N., along with her husband, attacked Paris. Fully turning against L.E.G.I.O.N, Persephone used every resource she could find to establish M.A.Y.H.E.M and seek revenge. “Devil’s Night” also intertwined with the backstories of many M.A.Y.H.E.M agents.
At the game’s start, Persephone sets up M.A.Y.H.E.M in Seoul, South Korea, targeting Dr. Babylon, the ambitious leader of L.E.G.I.O.N’s Ministry of Pride, who plans to harvest a giant Dark Matter crystal from a comet. The Franchise Force, consisting of former sky pirate Fortune and her robot companion Glory, U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer Hardtack, and former actor and self-proclaimed “Face of M.A.Y.H.E.M” Hollywood, is sent to kill Babylon but fails. Babylon distracts M.A.Y.H.E.M by using his lieutenant Hammersmith to cause destruction in Seoul, but Hammersmith is eventually defeated by the agents.
Babylon then deploys August Gaunt, a young singer and lieutenant, to brainwash his fans and turn Seoul against M.A.Y.H.E.M. The agents disrupt Gaunt’s concert and expose his technology, revealing him as a fraud.
M.A.Y.H.E.M plans to retrieve AISHA, a sentient computer program and virtual idol group used by L.E.G.I.O.N as a virus. One of Babylon’s cybernetic lieutenants, Steeltoe, falls in love with AISHA and plans to merge their AI. However, M.A.Y.H.E.M agents kill Steeltoe at their “wedding.” A vengeful AISHA, led by their red avatar, launches a smear campaign against M.A.Y.H.E.M, even creating a deadly musical single. AISHA then attacks the ARK’s computer programs, but the other AISHA avatars recognize Red AISHA’s instability. Most are killed, leaving only Red and Purple AISHA. Purple AISHA defects to M.A.Y.H.E.M, and the agents destroy Red AISHA.
Uhh, who are these guys?
Desperate, Babylon sends Ariadne, the brilliant daughter of a scientist he murdered, after trying to brainwash her with a microchip. Ariadne overcomes the chip but becomes insane and seeks revenge on Babylon. She launches robot attacks on Seoul and abducts several people, including M.A.Y.H.E.M’s tech engineer Katy “Gremlin” Fox. The agents rescue Gremlin, but Ariadne escapes, cutting the microchip out of her head.
M.A.Y.H.E.M eventually uncovers Babylon’s giant robot, Project Damocles. Babylon launches a citywide attack, including an assault on the ARK, and commandeers Damocles to extract the Dark Matter crystal. Ariadne had secretly placed her microchip in Damocles to drive Babylon insane, but this backfires when Babylon realizes he now holds ultimate power within L.E.G.I.O.N. He attempts to usurp the Morningstar and remake reality in his image.
Babylon uses Damocles and the Dark Matter crystal to begin rewriting reality to his rule. The agents enter the rift, battling Babylon and his recreated minions, and ultimately destroy the Dark Matter crystal. Reality is restored, and Damocles crashes to Earth. Babylon survives but is presumably killed by L.E.G.I.O.N’s Minister of Wrath, Marcus Longinus, as punishment for his failure. Persephone then withdraws M.A.Y.H.E.M from Seoul.
