A few days ago, DC Studios revealed their plans for the first phase of their new unified Universe. Unlike how Marvel Studios started, not everything…
The DC Universe is James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DC Comics shared universe, launched with the animated series Creature Commandos on Max in December 2024 and the theatrical film Superman on July 11, 2025. Unlike the DC Extended Universe that preceded it, the DCU is designed as a unified continuity spanning films, television, animation, and other media with the same actors playing the same characters across all platforms. Superman grossed approximately $618 million worldwide and established David Corenswet as the franchise’s defining figure in its opening year.
James Gunn and Peter Safran were appointed co-CEOs of DC Studios by Warner Bros. Discovery in October 2022. Gunn, who had previously directed The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker for Warner Bros. as well as the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy for Marvel Studios, brought a specific creative approach: a unified universe with consistent casting across all media, a willingness to move away from the DCEU’s continuity entirely, and a commitment to releasing films only when scripts were locked rather than working backward from release dates. Safran handled the business and production side of the partnership. Their initial slate announcement, Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, covered five films and five television series with varying stages of development.
Creature Commandos, a seven-episode adult animated series created by James Gunn, debuted on Max on December 5, 2024, and served as the DCU’s formal launch. Following a team of imprisoned monsters recruited for black operations by Amanda Waller, the series quietly introduced characters and established rules that carried forward into Superman and subsequent projects. Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. debuted in animated form here before appearing in live-action. Viola Davis reprised her Amanda Waller role from the DCEU, making it one of the few direct continuity bridges between the old and new universes. Sean Gunn voiced multiple characters including Maxwell Lord and Rick Flag Jr.
Superman, written and directed by James Gunn, released July 11, 2025, internationally and July 11, 2025, in North America, as the DCU’s first theatrical film. David Corenswet plays Clark Kent as an already-established public hero, with the film deliberately bypassing the origin story to examine what it means to maintain hope and decency as a public figure under scrutiny. Rachel Brosnahan plays Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult plays Lex Luthor as the film’s antagonist. The ensemble introduced several DCU heroes making their first appearances: Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, the abrasive Green Lantern; Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific; Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho; Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, Superman’s Kryptonian cousin and the future Supergirl; and María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica, the Engineer and a key member of The Authority. Krypto the super-dog also appeared. The film grossed approximately $618 million worldwide and was received positively by critics and audiences.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, directed by James Watkins from a script by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El and is scheduled for release on October 23, 2026, having been pushed from its original September 11, 2026, date to secure a pre-Halloween release window. Peacemaker Season 2, starring John Cena and featuring Frank Grillo returning as Rick Flag Sr., premiered on Max on August 21, 2025, with James Gunn writing all episodes and the season’s events feeding directly into the next Superman film. The Authority, a film about a team of superheroes who believe the world is broken and are willing to take extreme measures to fix it, is in development. Batman: The Brave and the Bold, the DCU’s Batman film, is in development with a writer attached but no cast or release date confirmed. Man of Tomorrow, a direct Superman sequel with David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult returning alongside Lars Eidinger as Brainiac, is scheduled for release July 9, 2027. Gunn has confirmed the events of the DCU are set roughly in real time, with each project taking place around the period of its release.
