Mojang Studios

Mojang Studios is a Swedish video game developer based in Stockholm, founded in 2009 by Markus Persson, known as Notch, and Jakob Porser. They are the creator of Minecraft, the best-selling video game of all time with over 300 million copies sold across all platforms. Microsoft acquired Mojang in September 2014 for $2.5 billion, one of the largest acquisitions in gaming history at the time. The studio was renamed from Mojang AB to Mojang Studios in 2020. Markus Persson departed following the acquisition and has had no involvement with the studio since.

Minecraft: The Best-Selling Game of All Time

Minecraft began as a solo project by Markus Persson, initially known as Cave Game, first released publicly in 2009. The game’s survival and creative sandbox mechanics, block-based construction, and procedurally generated worlds attracted a massive audience across every age group. By 2011 it had sold a million copies. By 2014, when Microsoft acquired Mojang, it had sold over 54 million copies. By 2025 it had sold over 300 million. It is the single best-selling video game ever made, surpassing Tetris and every other title in history. Minecraft is available on every platform that exists and maintains one of the largest active player communities of any game.

What Mojang Does Now

Mojang continues to develop and update Minecraft with regular major updates that add new biomes, mobs, mechanics, and content. They also developed Minecraft Dungeons, a dungeon crawler, and Minecraft Legends, an action strategy game. Neither reached the cultural impact of the original but both found their audiences. The studio supports the Minecraft marketplace where creators sell content within the game. Under Microsoft, Mojang operates with significant autonomy while benefiting from Microsoft’s resources for distribution and platform support including Xbox Game Pass.
