Kojima Productions is a Japanese video game developer founded by Hideo Kojima in December 2015 in Tokyo, following his departure from Konami after a very public falling out during the development of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Kojima had previously led game development at Konami for nearly thirty years, creating the Metal Gear franchise and establishing himself as one of the most distinctive creative voices in the medium. The studio has released Death Stranding, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, and has three projects in active development.
Hideo Kojima’s separation from Konami in 2015 was one of the most discussed events in gaming that year. Reports of hostile working conditions, Konami removing Kojima’s name from Metal Gear Solid V’s marketing before the game shipped, and the cancellation of Silent Hills, a highly anticipated horror game teased through the legendary P.T. demo, preceded the official split. Kojima left Konami in October 2015 and announced Kojima Productions as an independent studio the following month, partnering with Sony Interactive Entertainment for his first independent project. The P.T. demo was pulled from the PlayStation Store at the same time and remains unavailable, becoming one of the most discussed pieces of lost gaming history.
Death Stranding released in November 2019 for PlayStation 4, published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, with a PC version following in 2020. The game cast the player as Sam Porter Bridges, a delivery man tasked with reconnecting a fractured post-apocalyptic America while navigating terrain haunted by invisible entities called BTs. Its asynchronous multiplayer system allowed players to leave structures and supplies that appeared in other players’ worlds without direct interaction. It divided audiences sharply, with some finding its deliberate pace and themes of connection profound and others finding it tedious. It sold over five million copies and established Kojima Productions as a studio capable of executing ambitious original ideas independent of any franchise.
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach released in June 2025 for PlayStation 5 and was received as one of the biggest PS5 exclusives of the year, earning extensive critical acclaim. The sequel expanded the world, introduced new characters, and continued Sam’s story while refining the mechanics that had divided players in the original. Kojima acknowledged the first game was “too unique” for broad appeal and aimed for better balance in the sequel. A PC release was anticipated to follow the console launch on Sony’s standard timeline.
OD, also shown as OD Knock following its September 2025 TGS reveal, is a horror game being developed in partnership with Xbox Game Studios. Kojima serves as writer, director, and producer, with Jordan Peele contributing as a writer. The cast includes Sophia Lillis and Hunter Schafer. Kojima has described the project as exploring what it means to overdose on fear, and has said it will leverage Xbox Cloud Gaming technology for a gameplay format unlike anything he has made before. A new teaser called Knock was shown at TGS 2025. No release window has been announced.
Physint is a PlayStation-exclusive action-espionage game announced in January 2024, representing Kojima’s return to the genre he pioneered through Metal Gear. As of mid-2025, Physint was in the conceptual stage, with Kojima working on it independently while Kojima Productions focused on OD. Filming for live-action elements was set to begin in June 2026 under the internal codename Shimmer, with the cast including Charlee Fraser, Don Lee, and Minami Hamabe. Kojima indicated the game is five or six years away, pointing to a 2030 release window and likely a PlayStation 6 launch.
