The Outsiders was founded in 2015 by David Goldfarb, whose background in large-scale shooters like Battlefield 3 is visible in Metal: Hellsinger’s feel even at a much smaller scale. The studio’s first project, Darkborn, a first-person fantasy action game, was cancelled in 2020. Rather than fold, the team pushed forward with Metal: Hellsinger and delivered one of the more distinctive games of 2022.
The Outsiders shut down in October 2025 following layoffs at parent company Funcom. The closure came despite Metal: Hellsinger’s critical success and a VR port released in 2024, and despite the studio having contributed work to Dune: Awakening, Funcom’s biggest ever release. Goldfarb announced the news on Bluesky, noting the studio had survived Darkborn’s cancellation and hoped to do something even better, but that things do not always go as planned. He added that the team intended to continue in some new form. The IP remains under Funcom’s ownership, and Metal: Hellsinger is still available and playable on all platforms.
