CD Projekt Red

CD Projekt Red is a Polish video game developer and publisher based in Warsaw, best known for The Witcher series and Cyberpunk 2077. The studio, often shortened to CDPR, turned Andrzej Sapkowski's Witcher books into a game franchise that has sold over 90 million copies, then built Night City out of Mike Pondsmith's Cyberpunk tabletop RPG. In August 2026 the whole company officially took the CD Projekt RED name.

CD Projekt Red History: From Game Distributor to Witcher Developer

Marcin Iwiński and Michał Kiciński Found CD Projekt in 1994

CD Projekt started in 1994 when Marcin Iwiński and Michał Kiciński began importing and selling Western PC games in Poland, a market where piracy was the norm. The company made its name on Polish localizations, and its fully voiced Polish version of Baldur's Gate became a hit by putting real value in the box. That localization work led to the CD Projekt Red development division in 2002, founded with a plan to adapt The Witcher.

GOG.com and the Sale to Michał Kiciński

CD Projekt launched Good Old Games in 2008 as a DRM-free store for classic PC games, and it later became GOG.com. GOG stayed part of the group for 17 years until CD Projekt sold it to co-founder Michał Kiciński for 90.7 million zloty, with the deal closing on December 31, 2025. The two companies signed a distribution agreement, so The Witcher and Cyberpunk games still release on GOG.

The Witcher Games by CD Projekt Red

The Witcher (2007)

The Witcher launched in October 2007 on PC, built on BioWare's Aurora Engine and published outside Poland by Atari. Geralt of Rivia wakes up with amnesia at Kaer Morhen just before the witchers' keep is attacked, and the story follows him chasing the Salamandra gang that raided it. The rhythm-based combat was clunky even in 2007, but the moral choices with no clean right answer set the template for every Witcher game after it.

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings (2011)

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings followed in May 2011 and debuted CD Projekt Red's in-house REDengine. Geralt is framed for the murder of King Foltest and hunts the real kingslayer, Letho of Gulet. The second act splits completely depending on whether Geralt sides with Vernon Roche or the elf rebel Iorveth, so a single playthrough misses a big chunk of the game. An Enhanced Edition brought it to Xbox 360 in 2012.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015)

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt released on May 19, 2015, for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Geralt searches Velen, Novigrad, and Skellige for Ciri, his adopted daughter, while the Wild Hunt and its king Eredin chase her for her Elder Blood. It won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2015, came to Nintendo Switch in 2019, and got a free next-gen update for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in December 2022. CD Projekt Red reports The Witcher 3 has sold over 65 million copies.

The Witcher 3 Expansions: Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine

Hearts of Stone arrived in October 2015 and pits Geralt against Gaunter O'Dimm, the Man of Glass, in a deal-with-the-devil story built around Olgierd von Everec. Blood and Wine followed in May 2016 and sends Geralt to Toussaint for a vampire mystery involving Regis and Dettlaff, and it won Best RPG at The Game Awards 2016. Both expansions are now free for everyone who owns The Witcher 3.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered (2026)

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered launched on September 29, 2026, as a free upgrade for existing owners on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, and as a native Nintendo Switch 2 release that original Switch owners can claim at no cost. Beyond the visual overhaul, the remaster reworks combat and the skill tree, smooths out movement and Roach's handling, and adds transmogrification, new finishers, and an expanded photo mode. It is also on Battle.net through a partnership with Blizzard, and Xbox achievements carry over from the original release.

Gwent and Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales

Gwent started as a card game inside The Witcher 3 and spun off into Gwent: The Witcher Card Game, which fully launched in October 2018 alongside Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales, a single-player story game starring Queen Meve of Lyria and Rivia. CD Projekt Red ended active Gwent development in 2023 and handed card balancing over to a community council.

Cyberpunk 2077 and CD Projekt Red's Rocky Launch

Cyberpunk 2077 Launch Problems and the PlayStation Store Removal

Cyberpunk 2077 launched on December 10, 2020, after several delays, with Keanu Reeves playing Johnny Silverhand opposite the player character V in Night City. The PC version mostly held together, but the PS4 and Xbox One versions were badly broken, and Sony pulled the game from the PlayStation Store a week later. It didn't return to the store until June 2021, and CD Projekt Red spent the next few years patching its way back.

Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.0 and Phantom Liberty

Update 2.0 and the Phantom Liberty expansion in September 2023 are where Cyberpunk 2077 turned around. Update 2.0 rebuilt the perk trees and the police system, while Phantom Liberty added the Dogtown district and a spy thriller story starring Idris Elba as FIA agent Solomon Reed. Cyberpunk 2077 has now sold over 40 million copies and Phantom Liberty over 15 million, and the Ultimate Edition was a Nintendo Switch 2 launch title in June 2025.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and Edgerunners 2 on Netflix

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the anime made with Studio Trigger, premiered on Netflix in September 2022 and followed David Martinez and Lucy through Night City. CD Projekt Red credits the show with a measurable boost to Cyberpunk 2077's popularity right as the game was recovering. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, again made with Trigger, premieres on Netflix on October 20, 2026.

What Is CD Projekt Red Working On Next?

CD Projekt Red has lined up one big Witcher release per year through 2028, with the Cyberpunk sequel and a brand new IP further out.

The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past Release Date

Songs of the Past is the third expansion for The Witcher 3, developed with Fool's Theory and scheduled for 2027 on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. It brings Geralt back for one more adventure in Letten, a new region, and its first gameplay trailer debuted at Gamescom Opening Night Live in August 2026.

The Witcher 4 Release Window and Ciri

The Witcher 4 was revealed at The Game Awards in December 2024 with a cinematic trailer putting Ciri in the lead as a full witcher. It opens a new Witcher trilogy, runs on Unreal Engine 5 through a partnership with Epic Games, and CD Projekt Red is targeting a 2028 release.

Cyberpunk 2 Development Status

The Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, originally codenamed Project Orion, moved into preproduction in 2025. CD Projekt Red refers to it as Cyberpunk 2 in investor updates, though that isn't an official title. The Boston studio leads development alongside the Polish teams, and there is no release date or window yet.

The Witcher Remake by Fool's Theory

The Witcher Remake rebuilds the 2007 original in Unreal Engine 5, developed by Fool's Theory under CD Projekt Red's creative supervision. CD Projekt Red confirmed in 2026 that work on it has been temporarily folded into The Witcher 4 because of shared production dependencies, so it isn't expected before The Witcher 4 ships.

Project Sirius and Project Hadar

Project Sirius is a Witcher game with multiplayer elements led by The Molasses Flood, the studio behind The Flame in the Flood that CD Projekt Red acquired in 2021. Project Hadar is a completely original IP, the first CD Projekt Red has built without adapting existing source material, and it is still in early development.

Who Owns CD Projekt Red?

CD Projekt Red is an independent company publicly traded on the Warsaw Stock Exchange, and co-founders Marcin Iwiński and Michał Kiciński remain among its largest shareholders. In August 2026 the parent company changed its legal name from CD Projekt SA to CD Projekt RED SA, so the studio name players already used is now the official company name. Michał Nowakowski is one of the company's joint CEOs.
