Bethesda Game Studios

Bethesda Game Studios is an American video game developer based in Rockville, Maryland, founded in 2001 as the internal development arm of Bethesda Softworks. The studio is responsible for The Elder Scrolls and Fallout franchises, two of the most commercially successful and culturally influential RPG series in gaming history. Todd Howard has served as the studio’s executive producer and director across its major releases since Morrowind. In 2021, Microsoft acquired Bethesda’s parent company ZeniMax Media for $7.5 billion, making Bethesda Game Studios an Xbox Game Studios first-party developer.

I have put more hours into Bethesda games than almost anything else. Skyrim is one of those games I keep going back to, and Fallout 3 was the first open-world game that genuinely made me feel like my choices mattered.

The Elder Scrolls Series

The Elder Scrolls series began before Bethesda Game Studios was formalized as a separate entity, with Arena in 1994 and Daggerfall in 1996 establishing the framework of vast, explorable worlds. Morrowind in 2002 was the moment the series found its modern identity, an alien landscape with deep lore and genuine player freedom that remains a touchstone for RPG design. Oblivion in 2006 brought the series to wider audiences with its improved presentation and Radiant AI systems. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim in 2011 became a cultural phenomenon, selling over 30 million copies and being ported to essentially every platform that has existed since. It remains one of the best-selling games ever made. The Elder Scrolls VI has been announced but has no confirmed release window, with Todd Howard indicating it remains in early development.

The Fallout Series

Bethesda Game Studios acquired the Fallout IP from Interplay and developed Fallout 3 in 2008, reimagining the series in first person across a post-nuclear Washington D.C. It was a departure from the isometric originals that divided longtime fans while introducing the series to a much larger audience. Fallout: New Vegas, developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Bethesda Softworks in 2010, is not a Bethesda Game Studios title but is part of the same publishing family. Fallout 4 in 2015 expanded settlement-building and crafting systems. Fallout 76 in 2018 was the studio’s first multiplayer game and launched to widespread criticism before stabilizing with updates over subsequent years. The Amazon Prime Video Fallout series, released in April 2024 and set in the same universe as the games, drove a significant spike in Fallout 4 and 76 players.

Starfield

Starfield released in September 2023 as Bethesda Game Studios’ first new IP in 25 years, an original science fiction RPG set across a hand-crafted galaxy. It was one of the most anticipated Xbox first-party releases in years and launched to broadly positive reviews, though its more segmented open world divided opinions compared to the seamless exploration of the Elder Scrolls and Fallout games. The Shattered Space expansion released in September 2024, adding a new storyline and location. Starfield is available on Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Game Pass.

Microsoft Acquisition and Studio Closures

Microsoft completed the ZeniMax Media acquisition in March 2021, bringing Bethesda Game Studios, id Software, Arkane Studios, MachineGames, and other ZeniMax properties under the Xbox umbrella. In May 2024, Microsoft closed Arkane Austin, Tango Gameworks, and Alpha Dog Games as part of broader restructuring across Xbox Game Studios. Bethesda Game Studios was not among the closures and remains active, with The Elder Scrolls VI and continued Starfield support as the primary projects.
