Beethoven & Dinosaur is an Australian independent game studio based in Melbourne, founded by Johnny Galvatron. Before making games, Galvatron fronted the rock band The Galvatrons, and that music-first background defines everything the studio makes. In two games, both published by Annapurna Interactive, the studio has built a reputation for narrative-driven experiences where music is not the backdrop but the point: the BAFTA-winning The Artful Escape in 2021 and the coming-of-age game Mixtape in 2026.
Galvatron led The Galvatrons until 2017, when he left the band to form Beethoven & Dinosaur and build The Artful Escape. The studio runs on a deliberately small, tight-knit team that Galvatron has kept together across projects, and its games lean hard on narrative and atmosphere over complex mechanics. His protagonists tend to be based on real people he knows, and the rock and roll sensibility he brought from music consistently works its way back into the studio's output.
The Artful Escape, released in 2021, is the game that put the studio on the map. It is a psychedelic musical platformer following teenage guitar prodigy Francis Vendetti as he invents a cosmic stage persona on the eve of his first performance, with a lead character partly inspired by Bob Dylan and a look that channels David Bowie and Ziggy Stardust. Built in Unreal Engine after an early Epic Games dev grant, it won a BAFTA for Artistic Achievement and drew wide praise for fusing music and movement, even as some reviewers noted how short it was.
Mixtape, released May 7, 2026, is the studio's second game and a clear evolution of its style. Built in Unreal Engine 5, it follows three high school friends, Stacey, Van, and Cassandra, through their last day together before life pulls them apart, told as a surreal string of music-driven memories. It runs on a licensed soundtrack of era-defining artists including DEVO, Joy Division, The Cure, The Smashing Pumpkins, Iggy Pop, and Siouxsie and the Banshees. Galvatron has pointed to pacing as the biggest lesson carried over from The Artful Escape, and Mixtape launched to strong critical reception as one of the more acclaimed narrative games of 2026.
Across both games, Beethoven & Dinosaur makes the same kind of thing: short, music-soaked, narrative-first experiences that care more about feeling and performance than systems. The studio's ties to Annapurna Interactive, a publisher known for backing exactly this sort of artistic, story-led game, are a natural fit, and its small-team, music-driven approach makes it one of the more distinctive indie developers working today.
