Beenox is a Canadian game development studio founded in 2000 and based in Quebec City. The studio became part of Activision in 2005 and has spent much of its career as a support developer, working on ports, remasters, and licensed titles rather than original IP. Beenox is best known for its work on Spider-Man games during the early 2010s and its ongoing contributions to the Call of Duty franchise.
Beenox will always be synonymouswith Spider-Man games. Edge of Time, Shattered Dimensions, The Amazing Spider-Man games, they were all great in my opinion.
Beenox developed several Spider-Man titles during a prolific run in the early 2010s, including The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which tied into the Marc Webb film series. The studio also worked on Spider-Man: Edge of Time and Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, the latter of which was particularly well received for its multi-universe concept and varied gameplay styles across four different versions of Spider-Man. That game remains one of the more creative licensed titles from that era.
After the Spider-Man run ended, Beenox shifted focus to supporting Activision’s Call of Duty franchise. The studio has contributed to multiple entries in the series, handling PC ports and working on various components of the game alongside other Activision studios. This support role has made Beenox a reliable part of Activision’s development pipeline even if the work keeps them largely out of the spotlight.
Beenox continues to operate under Activision, which is now part of Microsoft following the acquisition completed in 2023. The studio has not announced any standalone projects in recent years, remaining focused on supporting larger franchises within the Activision catalog. Whether the Microsoft acquisition changes their role or opens up new opportunities remains to be seen.
Beenox has spent most of its career in service of other people’s franchises, but Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions alone earns them a place worth remembering.
