Hacks Season 5 delivers an amazing final season. I thought Ava having the upper-hand was great, but when Deborah is up against the wall with powers that be that she cannot get the upper-hand with, she brings out everything she has. Ava was easy to deal with, a huge corporation that could bury her? She has to get extra creative to not get buried.
Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder in the Hacks Final Season
Jean Smart closes out Deborah Vance with a performance that stays sharp right to the end, funny one minute and quietly wrecked the next as a comedian who got everything and still cannot stop chasing her legacy. Hannah Einbinder matches her as Ava Daniels, who has grown into a writer confident enough to push back instead of flinch. Their chemistry is still the reason the show works, and Season 5 leans on it harder than ever.
The supporting cast gets real closure. Carl Clemons-Hopkins as Marcus lands somewhere between loyalty to Deborah and a life of his own. Kaitlin Olson's DJ gets a storyline that circles back to Deborah's old promises as her daughter. Paul W. Downs and Megan Stalter as Jimmy and Kayla keep the chaos coming, and their talent agency subplot pays off. Tony Goldwyn's Bob Lipka comes back as the network boss who becomes the season's real villain.
Deborah and Ava's Relationship in Hacks Season 5
The whole series has been building toward what Season 5 does with Deborah and Ava. The partnership that started as betrayal and mentorship and rivalry hits its final form, with Ava established enough to stand her ground and Deborah still unable to stop trying to control everything. They fight, they need each other, and every shot one takes lands on both of them. That push and pull is still the best thing the show has.
Marcus works the loyalty-versus-himself angle one last time, and DJ's arc keeps the cost of Deborah's choices in the frame. Jimmy and Kayla's agency subplot carries the industry satire, showing how far nerve and incompetence get two people in Hollywood. Jimmy and Kayla have made me laugh the entire show, I wish those two would get a spinoff. The season spreads out to a lot of characters without losing the two at the center.
Bob Lipka Sabotages Madison Square Garden in Hacks Season 5
The false TMZ death report from the end of Season 4 lights the fuse. It gets to Deborah, and she comes back set on cementing a legacy nobody can take from her. She abandons an early plan to chase an EGOT and locks onto one goal instead, selling out Madison Square Garden, the kind of stage that would put her name in the record books. The catch is that she is still barred from performing, and Ava spends the season trying to work around the injunction.
Things don't go as planned though, Bob Lipka pulls the rug out. He buys out Madison Square Garden himself, not to book anything, just to keep Deborah off the stage and stop her from talking about him in public. It is the one power move she cannot out-scheme, so she flips it. She throws together a last-minute stand-up show in Central Park, and the crowd that shows up turns it into the real triumph of the season. The Garden was never the point. Deborah and Ava beating the people trying to bury them was.
How Hacks Ends: Deborah's Cancer and the Series Finale
The finale goes somewhere heavier than the setup lets on. After the Central Park high, Deborah takes Ava to Europe, and over lunch she drops the real news. The mass she had removed earlier in the season came back and spread. She is not doing chemo. She plans to end things on her own terms at an assisted suicide facility in Zurich, and she wants Ava to come with her. Ava refuses, fights her on it, storms off, and calls Jimmy, who already knows and has made his peace with it.
What follows is a farewell tour through Paris before Zurich. Ava finally got to eat real bread and the crunch on it had me craving bread too. They walk, they eat, Deborah buys out the Louvre so it is just the two of them, they go dancing. And then the thing the whole show has always been about saves her. The banter with Ava reminds Deborah she still loves writing jokes, and she decides she is not done after all. The illness that looked like an ending becomes the thing that finally seals the bond between them, and Hacks closes on Deborah and Ava together, still making each other better, which is exactly where it started.
Hacks Season 5 Review Score
Season 5 sticks the landing. It keeps the jokes mean enough that the emotional turns never tip into sap, and it gives Deborah and Ava an ending that feels earned across five seasons. Some of the final stretch trades the show's usual friction for a feel-good sendoff, and a few supporting arcs get less room than they used to, but the core relationship carries it easily. Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder walk away without a wasted step. Season 5 earns a 9.4 out of 10. All five seasons of Hacks is available to stream on HBO Max.
