Stranger Things
Stranger Things is the Duffer Brothers' Netflix sci-fi horror series set in Hawkins, Indiana, running five seasons and 42 episodes from 2016 to the series finale on December 31, 2025. Millie Bobby Brown plays Eleven, Winona Ryder plays Joyce Byers, David Harbour plays Jim Hopper, and a group of kids and teens spend the whole show fighting monsters from the Upside Down. Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen executive produce alongside Matt and Ross Duffer.
Stranger Things Plot and Story
The show starts in 1983 when Will Byers vanishes and a girl with telekinetic powers, Eleven, turns up in the woods outside Hawkins. His friends Mike Wheeler, Dustin Henderson, and Lucas Sinclair go looking for him, and the search pulls in Joyce Byers, Chief Hopper, and the secrets of Hawkins National Laboratory. Over five seasons the story grows from a missing kid mystery into a fight against Vecna and the rifts he opens across town.
Stranger Things Seasons and Episodes
Stranger Things Season 1
Season 1 premiered in July 2016 with eight episodes. It introduces the Demogorgon, Eleven, and the Upside Down, and it set the 1980s Spielberg and Stephen King tone that the rest of the show built on.
Stranger Things Season 2
Season 2 arrived in October 2017 with nine episodes and brings in the Mind Flayer, Max Mayfield, and Billy Hargrove. It also gave Dustin his pet Dart and expanded Eleven's backstory.
Stranger Things Season 3
Season 3 premiered in July 2019 with eight episodes, set around the Starcourt Mall and the Fourth of July. The Mind Flayer returns, and the Russian base under the mall becomes a major part of the plot.
Stranger Things Season 4
Season 4 was released in two parts in May and July 2022 with nine supersized episodes. It introduces Vecna, played by Jamie Campbell Bower, and the story splits between Hawkins, Lenora Hills in California, and Russia. Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill had a huge second life because of this season, and Max Mayfield was left in a coma after Vecna controlled her body.
Stranger Things Season 5
Season 5 is the final season, with eight episodes released in three parts, four on November 26, 2025, three on December 25, and the finale on December 31. It is set in the fall of 1987, with Hawkins scarred by the rifts and the group trying to find and kill Vecna, who has vanished. The government has also put the town under military quarantine and stepped up its hunt for Eleven. The finale, Chapter Eight: The Rightside Up, ran 128 minutes and also played in limited theatrical runs.

The Duffer Brothers and the Creators
Matt and Ross Duffer created Stranger Things, and they wrote and directed episodes through the entire run. The show is a Netflix original produced with Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen of 21 Laps Entertainment, and it drew heavily on E.T., Stand by Me, The Goonies, and Stephen King's work. Netflix announced Prey director Dan Trachtenberg for an episode in Season 5, but he dropped out because of Predator: Badlands. Frank Darabont came out of retirement to direct Episodes 3 and 5 in his place.
Stranger Things Spinoffs and What Comes Next
Stranger Things: Tales From '85
Tales From '85 is an animated spinoff set between Seasons 2 and 3, and it premiered on Netflix on April 23, 2026. It uses a new voice cast instead of the live-action actors, and Eric Robles is the showrunner with the Duffer Brothers as executive producers. The look is built around the Saturday morning cartoons the Duffers grew up on.
Canon is where fans split. Robles has described the series as soft canon, meaning the character personalities carry over but the lore is looser, and the main show never references anything that happens in it. Some of its events and monsters also don't line up cleanly with what the live-action series established, so I treat it as an optional side story and not required viewing.
Stranger Things: The First Shadow
The First Shadow is a stage play prequel centered on a young Henry Creel, and it has run on the West End and Broadway. Netflix recorded the play in early 2026 to release at a future date on the streaming platform.
The Live-Action Spinoff
The Duffer Brothers have confirmed a live-action spinoff, but Ross Duffer said it is in very early days and it will not center on Eleven, Will, or the Hawkins gang. There is no title, cast, or release date yet.
My Take on Stranger Things
Stranger Things is a once in a generation show. Everyone who watched it had a theory. It reminded me a lot of what happened with Lost in the early 2000s. Even though seasons came out years apart, it seems like the audience just grew year after year with new theories.
Is Stranger Things Over?
Yes, Season 5 is the final season and the series finale aired on December 31, 2025. The universe is continuing through Tales From '85, the stage play, and the planned live-action spinoff, but the main Hawkins story is finished.
