The Adventures of Willy Beamish is a graphic adventure game developed by Dynamix. The game was published by Sierra On-Line for Amiga and MS-DOS in 1991. They published it for Macintosh in 1992. It was released on Sega CD in 1993. In 2017, Activision re-released the game for Windows. The game was created with hand-drawn animation. It was made specifically to look like a Saturday morning cartoon.
The Adventures of Willy Beamish Gameplay
The game is a point-and-click adventure. You control Willy by clicking on objects, people, and dialogue options. Progress depends on solving puzzles and making the right choices. Make the wrong choices and your Trouble-O-Meter goes up. Everyday decisions matter. Things like Willy washing his dad’s car, helping his mom, or playing with his sister will affect the Trouble-O-Meter. Get into too much trouble and the game ends.
The Adventures of Willy Beamish Story
The story begins on the last day of school when Willy’s frog disrupts an assembly, landing him in detention. At home, his father shocks the family by announcing he has been laid off, forcing them to cut expenses. This means Willy cannot afford the entry fee for the Nintari video game championship he has been training for. As Willy struggles with everyday childhood dilemmas, dealing with bullies, annoying sisters, and strict teachers, he stumbles into a larger plot involving corrupt adults and a scheme to sabotage the city’s sewer system.
Throughout the game, Willy’s choices affect his standing with his parents via a Trouble-O-Meter. If he pushes his luck too far, he risks being sent to military school, ending the game. If you make the right choices, Willy saves the town and wins the Nintari championship. I was sent to military school a lot in this game. I remember hiding the report card, being late for school, getting caught sneaking out of school, probably everything I could possibly do to get in trouble.
