The Evil Within is a third person perspective survival horror game developed by Tango Gameworks. The game was published by Bethesda Softworks on October 14, 2014 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PS4, and Windows. The game was added to Game Pass on March 12, 2021, after Microsoft's acquisition of Bethesda.

The Evil Within Gameplay
The gameplay style of The Evil Within blends survival horror with action. The style is a lot like the original Resident Evil games, which I absolutely loved. There's probably a reason for that though, The Evil Within was directed by Shinji Mikami, who also created Resident Evil. The game emphasizes tension, resource management, and psychological unease, all of which Resident Evil was known for. Players step into the role of detective Sebastian Castellanos, navigating nightmarish environments filled with grotesque enemies and shifting realities. Combat can be challenging, with limited ammunition and supplies forcing careful choices between stealth and direct confrontation. Traps, environmental hazards, and puzzles add variety, while the game's shifting world design keeps players off balance, often changing layouts or warping space to heighten dread. Exploration is rewarded with scarce resources and story fragments, but the danger is constant and every encounter can feel risky. Overall, the style is a mix of classic survival horror mechanics with modern cinematic presentation, designed to keep players tense and uncertain throughout.

The Evil Within Story
The Evil Within tells the story of detective Sebastian Castellanos, who is called to Beacon Mental Hospital to investigate a brutal massacre. What begins as a routine case quickly spirals into a descent through a warped reality controlled by Ruvik, a mysterious figure tied to horrific experiments. Sebastian is pulled into the STEM system, a machine that links minds together, trapping him in a shifting nightmare where environments twist and monsters embody trauma and fear.

As he fights to survive, Sebastian uncovers fragments of Ruvik's past, a childhood marked by tragedy and an obsession with control, which explain the distorted world around him. Alongside colleagues Joseph Oda and Juli Kidman, he struggles to distinguish illusion from reality, facing grotesque creatures, deadly traps, and psychological torment. The story steadily reveals that Ruvik's consciousness dominates STEM, using it to manipulate and torment anyone connected.

By the end, Sebastian learns that the horrors are not random but manifestations of Ruvik's mind, designed to keep him trapped. Escaping Beacon Hospital, Sebastian is left shaken, uncertain whether he has truly broken free or if Ruvik's influence lingers. The narrative blends survival horror with psychological themes, making the journey as much about confronting inner demons as battling external threats.

The Evil Within Voice Acting
The voice acting in The Evil Within plays a crucial role in grounding its surreal horror. Detective Sebastian Castellanos is voiced by Anson Mount, whose restrained delivery captures both the exhaustion and determination of a man trapped in a nightmare, while at the same time his real life is a nightmare in and of itself. Jackie Earle Haley brings menace to Ruvik, giving the antagonist a chilling presence that matches the game's twisted environments. Jennifer Carpenter voices Juli Kidman, adding tension and ambiguity to her role as Sebastian's partner with hidden motives. Having her play Kidman had me thinking of the character as Deb, Dexter's sister, who was played by Carpenter in the show. Joseph Oda, voiced by Yuri Lowenthal, provides a steadier counterbalance, often acting as Sebastian's anchor in the chaos.

The performances lean into subtle emotion rather than exaggerated theatrics, which helps the game's horror feel more unsettling. Characters sound weary, paranoid, or quietly manipulative, reinforcing the psychological tone. Combined with the eerie sound design, the voice acting ensures that even dialogue-heavy scenes maintain the same sense of dread as the combat and exploration.

The Evil Within: The Assignment DLC
The Assignment DLC shifts the focus to Juli Kidman, revealing her hidden role in the events of The Evil Within. Sent by MOBIUS, she enters STEM with orders to secure Leslie as a vessel for Ruvik's consciousness. The story follows her through warped environments where she relies on stealth and puzzle-solving rather than heavy combat, emphasizing vulnerability and psychological tension.
Kidman confronts visions of Sebastian, Joseph, and Tatiana, blurring the line between reality and illusion. She faces the Shade, a terrifying creature that stalks her through the city, and The Administrator, who embodies MOBIUS's manipulation. Throughout, Kidman wrestles with her loyalty to MOBIUS versus her growing doubts about their motives.
By the end, The Assignment exposes Kidman's conflicted allegiance and sets up her continued struggle in The Consequence. It reframes the main game's events from her perspective, showing why she disappears and how her actions tie directly into MOBIUS's larger plans.

The Evil Within: The Consequence DLC
The Consequence continues Juli Kidman's journey inside STEM, showing her struggle against MOBIUS's control and Ruvik's influence. After escaping the chaos of The Assignment, Kidman is forced to navigate warped environments in Krimson City and Beacon Hospital, relying on stealth and puzzle-solving rather than heavy combat. She learns that burning Ruvik's paintings can weaken his hold over Leslie, who MOBIUS intends to use as a vessel. Along the way, Kidman confronts The Administrator, a figure representing MOBIUS's manipulation, and faces visions of Sebastian, Joseph, and Tatiana that blur reality.
The story reveals Kidman's conflicted loyalty: she wants to protect Leslie but is bound by MOBIUS's orders, leaving her torn between duty and conscience. By the end, she secures Leslie's safety but remains entangled in MOBIUS's schemes, setting the stage for their larger role in The Evil Within 2. The DLC closes her two-part arc, reframing events from the main game through her perspective and adding depth to the series' overarching narrative.

The Evil Within: The Executioner DLC
The Executioner DLC shifts the perspective to a first-person experience, putting players in control of the Keeper, the hulking, safe-headed monster from The Evil Within. Unlike the main game's survival horror focus, this DLC plays more like an arena-style action campaign.
The story follows Pedro Martin, who enters STEM as the Keeper, the hulking, safe-headed monster from the main game. MOBIUS sends him in to eliminate rogue test subjects and stabilize a new STEM system from the inside, with the promise that doing so will save his daughter Marta, one of the subjects losing her mind inside it. The cruel twist is that Pedro's own actions, including reading Marta's notes, speed up her mental degradation instead of slowing it. To free her, he has to face a dark version of his own Keeper avatar that wants to trap Marta forever. Pedro can only win by destroying his own avatar, likely killing himself in the process. He goes through with it, and the final scene shows Marta awake in the real world, standing beside Pedro's STEM pod, at peace. The Executioner closes on a heavier, more personal note than the other expansions, giving the Keeper a tragic origin instead of leaving him a faceless boss.
