Undertale is a 2d roleplaying video game. It was developed by Toby Fox. Undertale was released on September 15, 2015 on Windows, OSX, Linux, PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One. It is pretty unique in that you don’t need to kill anyone in order to beat it. I beat it twice, once without killing anyone and once killing a few people.
Undertale is set in a realm where monsters were banished to when they lost the war with humans. The realm is known as the Underground. It’s sealed from the surface by a single magic barrier. One day a human child falls into the Underground and encounters Flowey, a flower who teaches him about the mechanics of the game. He explains you need to raise your LV or LOVE by gaining EXP through killing monsters along the way. Eventually Flowey betrays the child, but before they can be hurt, Toriel, a goat like monster intervenes.
Toriel is very kind and motherly. She teaches the child how to survive without killing anyone or anything. She tries to adopt the child in order to protect them from the king of the Underground, Asgore. The child eventually grows homesick and leaves Toriel’s home to search for Asgore’s castle that contains the magical barrier to get back home. The child encounters many monsters, including skeleton brothers Sans and Papyrus, the head of the royal Guard, Undyne, Alphys, the royal scientist, and Mettaton, a robotic TV host.
The Human/Monster War
Eventually you learn about what caused the war between the humans and the monsters. Asriel was the son of Asgore and Toriel. They befriended the first child who fell into the Underground and was adopted by Asgore and Toriel who loved them very much. One day the child abruptly died and Asriel returned their body to the surface, but the humans saw a monster with a dead child and assumed the worst. Humans attacked and murdered Asriel. When Asgore found out, he was furious and declared war on the humans. In order to win break free from the Underground he needs seven human souls to break the barrier. He already has six, the child would be the seventh and final one needed.
Neutral Ending
If you play and don’t kill the majority of the monsters or none on your first playthrough, you will get the neutral ending. In it, you find out the barrier needs a monster’s soul as well as the humans. You find out from Sans that LOVE is an acronym for level of violence and EXP stands for execution points. The human then fights Asgore, but Flowey ends up killing Asgore and steals the souls. Flowey is defeated with the help of the human souls and the human passes out. When they wake up, they are on the surface. They get a phone call from Sans telling them all about what has changed in the Underground since they left.
Pacifist Ending
If you play and don’t kill any monsters after completing a neutral ending, you receive the pacifist ending. Flowey is revealed to be Asriel reincarnated as one of Alphy’s experiments. When you fight Asgore, the fight is disrupted by Toriel and your other friends. Flowey attacks the group and absorbs all the souls and monsters in order to return to Asriel’s older form. During the fight with Flowey, the human connects with their friends and are able to defeat the villainous flower. Asriel is reverted to his child form before destroying the barrier and bids them all fare well. The human passes out and this time wakes up with their friends surrounding them. The human’s name is finally revealed as Frisk. The monsters reintegrate with the human on the surface while Frisk accepts Toriel as their adoptive mother.
No Mercy Ending
The third ending type is known as the no mercy or genocide ending. Frisk kills all the monsters and when they reach Asgore’s castle, Sans tries and fails to stop them. Flowey kills Asgore in order to appease Frisk, but he is killed as well. Chara, the first child who fell to the Underground appears and destroys the universe. You must replay the game again to restore the universe which affects all pacifist playthroughs from then on.
I ended up doing the neutral ending and then eventually went back and did a pacifist ending.
