Let's go hunting
Red Dead Redemption 2 is a prequel to Red Dead Redemption where you play as Arthur who is part of the Van der Linde gang. John Marston, the protagonist from the first Red Dead Redemption is also a member of the same gang. Abigail and Jack are also involved with the gang as well.
Well, well, well.
Arthur became an outlaw after his mother died of unknown causes and witnessing his father’s death. He was “adopted” by Dutch when he was 11 years old and was part of the gang ever since.
Photo bomb!
The gang realizes that they are at the end of the old west, that soon the lawlessness would come to an end and that they’d need to conform and find other ways to survive. Before going main stream, they just need to pull of a job big enough to get them enough money to start their new lives.
I can see my house from here
Pulling off one last big heist makes Dutch, the leader of the gang, hyper focused on the goal while losing sight of everything else, making bad calls and having his gang have to go against his orders.
Oh my Arthur
The bad calls means that he gets sloppy, and unwilling to help his own gang. Eventually all faith in Dutch is lost when he leaves Arthur to deal with the army, John for dead, and refuses to rescue Abigail when she’s taken hostage.
You looking at me?
The game has an honor system which changes what outfits you can wear and what dialogue is spoken. While the game mainly remains unchanged due to how you play, the look of your Arthur and interactions he has with people will change based on your honor.
Let's go riding!
Early in the game Arthur is tasked to get money owed to the gang by Thomas Downes. Though you have the option to beat him down or not, regardless of what you choose to do, he will eventually cough blood on Arthur’s face. Later in the game you learn that Thomas has died due to his illness.
Shhh, they'll never know
When Arthur learns he has tuberculosis, he starts reflecting on his actions. He knew he couldn’t be an outlaw and expect good things to happen to him after his son and the son’s mother’s graves when they were killed over $10. Even though he couldn’t have good things happen to him, he still wanted to help his people after his death so he told John to run away with Abigail and Jack.
Does this horse make my butt look big?
Your honor determines how Arthur’s story ends. High honor means he succumbs to his illness while watching the sunrise. Low honor means another member of the gang executes him. Depending on how much time and bonding you’ve done with your horse, you could also get a special scene with him before your death.
Look it's John Marston!
Eight years after Arthur’s death, you start playing as John. John’s trying to get his life together, eventually buying a ranch and working with some former gang members to build a house on it. John marries Abigail after he gets the gang’s Blackwater stash to pay his debt.
The game ends with Edgar Ross watching John’s ranch, which leads into Red Dead Redemption.
