When Hollywood says that they are doing a remake of a movie, you expect it to be the same movie that they did years before, maybe updating it for the current generation. Friday the 13th doesn’t do that. Friday the 13th acknowledges what happened in the first movie with his mother, but then kind of retells the follow-up movies in a totally different way.
We start out with Jason’s mother being beheaded and Jason coming out of the woods after seeing this and taking her head to his cabin. We then fast forward presumably years later and have a set of teens in the woods looking for a marijuana plant. That group all presumably get killed and then a few weeks later we see one of the girl’s brother coming to Crystal Lake to find his sister. He runs into another group of teens who is looking to have fun at Crystal Lake, and like the group before them almost all of them die.
If I ruined anything for you in that little summary then obviously you haven’t ever seen a Jason movie before, since all of them have to deal with teenagers getting away from their parents and authority figures all together to have some unsupervised drinking, drug use, and sex up at Crystal Lake.
So how does this count as a re-imagining and not just another sequel? Well when we first see adult Jason he is wearing the bag over his head like he wore in Friday the 13th Part 2. In the film he finds the iconic hockey mask. It has nods to previous movies, like the wheelchair from a previous movie, and even the kills are nods to previous movies. It even answers some questions, like how does Jason get around Crystal Lake without being seen? (Series of tunnels) And why aren’t the residents afraid to live in Crystal Lake? (If you leave the actual lake alone and not bother Jason, he won’t bother you.)
The movie also gives Jason more humanity than previous movies. You see his bed when he was in camp, his toys, and he does something in the movie he hasn’t done in any movie, he kidnaps a girl who looks like his mother and takes care of her in some weird sick way.
The Killer Cut edition has additional scenes that weren’t seen in theaters, but other than that the DVD is lacking in extra features, though I would still recommend picking it up if you are a fan of horror, or a fan of the Friday the 13th Franchise. I’m going to give this two ratings, one for how it compares to the other films in the series and one for how it stands up as a whole. Compared to other films in the series it is a 9 out of 10. Overall I give the movie a 7 out of 10.
I don’t know what you think but the idea of a man, a killer and a group of teenagers trapped in a house and surrounded by this sick minded man,( here it is Jason) doesn’t scare me any more. I find it very stupid in deed.
I don’t know if it’s supposed to be a horror flick in general, it’s more of a slasher flick, much like Freddy, Michael, etc.
