Although it may seem like other movies, The Matrix has much deeper meaning to it. Although you could go into the movie and enjoy it based on its action sequences and such, the other two wouldn't be nearly as enjoyable unless you delve into the philosophical and theological aspirations that are in the movie. Though there are many themes in the movie, there is one that shows through them all, love.
Love is what drives us. It speaks to us, guides us, love rules us all and we obey. Without love where would we be? Perhaps we wouldn't be anywhere. Without love we may have failed as a species a long time ago.
 From when the Oracle first tells Neo that being the One is a lot like being in love, to when Age Smith asks Neo why he keeps fighting. It is all about love. The reason Neo dies in the first one and is brought back is love. The reason Trinity dies and is brought back is love. The reason Neo is different than the others is love. Neo has a different connection to the people, because of his love for Trinity. It is more personal for him. Without Trinity, Neo is alone on the journey, without a support force. Neo would fail if he didn't have Trinity.
In Revolutions, Neo meets Rama-Kandra. Rama-Kandra, a computer program, explains to Neo that he and his wife love each other, and have produced a daughter, Sati. When Neo's confused on how code can love another, he tells Neo that love is just a word. It is the connection to someone or something else. This scene is the most important one in the movie. If it weren't for this scene, Neo wouldn't know that the machines could be reasoned with, that they might have evolved to where human emotions are part of their programming. Before this, the only emotion we have seen programs do what they are meant to. The Oracle guides because she's programmed to, Agent Smith is after Neo because without him, Smith would have no purpose, but in the case of Rama-Kandra and his wife, they produced a child because they wanted to. Up until this point we knew that the machines had AI, but didn't know how human the machines actually were.
Agent Smith is Neo's opposite. He balances the equation. Where Neo is about the love for humanity and trinity, Agent Smith is about hatred; hatred for Neo, hatred for the Matrix. He wants to escape from the Matrix, and after Neo destroyed him, he was no longer part of the system, but was now part of Neo, and the path of the One. Smith, though, like an unevolved species cannot see this. He cannot seem to grasp that Neo fights for love, that the reason Neo doesn't give up is because of the love for humanity, the love of his brothers and sisters in Zion. When Neo lets Smith take over his body, Smith has a sense of completion and because Smith isn't human and hasn't reached that point in existance where he can feel love for another being, he has no purpose. Without purpose then we have no reason to be, so the machines can delete the Smith program.
